Good evening,

Members were quite helpful in pointing me toward an informsti9nal thread which addresses choosing proper set size for your/your group's needs. I've reviewed it and will keep those points in mind going forward.

What I am eager to hear, however, is community concensus on the top picks I have narrowed down to.

I realize this is probably the most repetitive topic on here, but I sincerely appreciate the feedback.

Based on my own taste of design appearance, I arrived at the following three sets. I will list them from least to most expensive:

-Discount Poker Shop's 13.5g Stripe Suited V2 Clay Set, $125

-Claysmith The Mint Clay Composite Set, $160

-Poker Merchant Monte Carlo Cash Game Set, $270 without "upgraded" components

I'm particularly interested to hear what members have to say about The Mint. I love the molded look. However, I saw one recent review that someone bought one set and it arrived with multiple flaws, including poor color saturation and off-center inlay stickers.

Thanks all!

Typo, *informational

Let me know if you are interested and I am happy to send you samples of a few varieties which I have assuming you cover the shipping. I would suggest looking at NexGen and Majestic/Royal from Apache Poker Chips as well played options and good value for money.

Also buy some samples of the hybrids here: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/samples-sun-web-greek-cards-no-mold.117345/

Many options are available and I think the consensus is these are higher quality than some that you have listed. This is of course subjective but I have been satisfied with all of my purchases. Also consider used casino chips as I have found some great value here recently in the classifieds.

I view the purchase as an heirloom that I will use for many years and have narrowed it down to several candidates. Looking for a 500 set that's high quality but not as high-priced as Paulson.
If the above is your min requirement, all 3 are not heirloom or high-quality worth.

They are just basic entry level chips with denominations.

Also FYI Clay / Composite Clay by mass market sellers is not actually Paulson Clay

Thank you for the clarification, I'm still green with understanding the differences.

LOVE the Dunes chips from Apache, missed those when I first looked at the site.

Side story: a local business magnate told me his most impressive experience during his early days. He has become a mentor and was telling me about pitching his product to potential accounts in NV. He dropped into The Dunes, at that point he was roughly my age. Started playing Black Jack and pretty soon the whole friggin Rat Pack rolls in and don't they pick his table to play. I told him I wanted a time machine :cool

Get your hands on samples of each. That's going to be your best way to make sure you get what you really want.

The Dunes from Apache are one of my favorite entry level chips. The classic Dunes golf course inlay and the Dunes mold in the chips makes them a very attractive choice. However, they are "china clays" and not so durable. While you're on the Apache website, check out the Mirage chips. They are produced on one of the better ceramic molds (the web mold) and 500 chips will cost you about $275, same price as the Dunes. Not bad.

The following is 100% genuine and is a compilation of various posts on here.

Congrats, you've decided to move on from dice chips, something lots of people who host a game never do. Things to keep in mind:

1. Get samples, I know this beat to death but really is important to get a feel for what YOU like.
2. IF you prefer an budget option over a premium (eg. China Clay vs RHC) there's nothing wrong with that, don't let anyone railroad you because it's not the premium choice. It can be a little hard on this site when beautiful sets are posted everday.
3. If you're the one paying for the chips, not you and your attendees pitching in together to get a set, choose what YOU like. You can of course get their opinion but at the end of the choice is yours. No one is going to stop coming to the game because you picked chips they don't like.
4. You're on a budget, everyone's got one, time to decide what matters to you. You can get a complete set like you mentioned in your original post but you may end up with some chips that never get used. You can build your own set via something like Apache, nexgens or discount poker store. Another option is to practice patience and save a little more, you're right on the edge of being able to afford a group buy. Look through the past options and see if there are any sets you like! (Samples are available for these too). With this you're also able to determine the quantity that best fits your stakes.

Good luck!

Zilla, has Apache ever launched tribute sets from other golden age locations?

Thank you for the concise and direct feedback! If I were to pursue casino-used chips someday when I have a bigger budget, what's the concensus on Spinetti's offerings? Obviously the bigger the name, the bigger the price tag. That's for down the road a bit but I did notice they get some beautiful vintage sets...

Not that I remember, but Apache is a great vendor.
If PRICE is your main concern, my brother has a set of chips that are currently on eBay - $94 for 500 chips. They work fine as poker chips and are better than dice chips, IMO. Just eBay search: 2 stripe twist poker chips. The seller also has a direct website Casino4you.com and it looks like you can get 500 of these for around $65 shipped from their site. I have never ordered from them and I can't vouch for them, but they do sell on eBay so they should be somewhat reliable? At that price it is also possible to remove the labels and put your own custom labels in place of them, should you want to do that.

Does anyone have a link to a thread that shows the total pricing breakdown per chip [clay] from CPC, given different variables?

Here's another question recording CPC. I notice that in the section showing edge spot options, a single color scheme is used [white, green, blue, black]. Is this the only color scheme available for edge spots, or just the sample for the sake of illustration?

Sake of the illustration.

Very nice, after all of your kind recommendations and tips, I think I am going to go with my gut and wait a bit til I have a better budget. I want this to be a long-lasting, heirloom quality purchase and I'd also like to develop something for the inlay that makes them uniquely mine. Love the fact that CPC offers foiling on inlay kogo/text as well. Thank you to all who have contributed!
