Hey everyone,

I’m new to the forum and very interested in eventually participating in a group buy, but before jumping in I want to do my due diligence and follow the advice I see recommended over and over - ordering samples and getting some hands-on experience first.

Up until now, my only real reference point has been an off-the-rack Walmart chip set, so this is very much new territory for me. I host laid-back, low-stakes home games with friends, and while I’m drawn to the idea of 43mm chips (they seem like they’d be pretty rad for a home game), I’ve never actually handled them. I’m currently torn between 39mm and 43mm and would love to get a feel for both before committing.

Pardon my ignorance here, but would my best initial move be to order a few samples through Justin (Broken Arrow), assuming that’s ultimately the route I’d go for a group buy anyway? Or would it make more sense to start with samples from somewhere like The Poker Store or Apache to establish a baseline first? My thinking is to evaluate chips that will best translate to what I’d eventually end up with, but I’d really appreciate any guidance from those with more experience.

Thanks in advance, looking forward to learning.

There are so many amazing high quality chips here. My best advice would be to order a 39mm Tina hybrid set from Justin and forget you ever heard of this place. You’ll have a nice quality set that would please 99% of the world. Your wallet will thank me.

Obviously this forum is full of that last 1% of enthusiasts. Grab samples for sure. The different molds feel and sound different on the hybrids as well. Clay is the top end, that if you hang around long enough you will want a set I promise. Run and hide lol.

Haha yeah I can completely see with the digging I've done thus far as with many hobbies, the rabbit hole goes deep. I appreciate your insight and honest advice and I'll without a doubt keep that in mind. I think I'll end up doing as you recommended and ordering some samples from Justin and go from there. I'm absolutely looking forward to upgrading my current set as anything I get will be leagues beyond. Thanks again for the solid advice and for the reply, appreciate it!

I bought samples off most commercial websites, plus a full CPC color sample.

Main question is what kind of budget are you comfortable spending?

Recommend you go with Justin’s hybrid options for the first sample - good value and lots of designs to choose from. Spend $10-$20 there first and you’ll be golden. For a while ;)

Also check out @Hobbyphilic video’s, he’s reviewed most of the chips you’ll be looking at that are a solid upgrade from dice chips:

That’s a great looking batch of samples you’ve got there! I’m thinking around $400-$500 for a decent set of 600, then I’ll get case for em’. And yeah Justin’s sounds like the plan thus far, though I may buy some off commercial sites as you’ve done just to see those as well. Thanks for dropping the YT link as well, I’ll give that a look. Really appreciate the advice and input Kam!
