Earthquake! (1 Viewer)

Most here in northern Jersey felt a brief shudder, nothing much. I was working in Newark at the time and was on the 14th floor of a big office building. The whole building went for a ride for a few minutes, swayed enough that you could just notice something wasn't right, and enough that we could see the blinds on the windows moving / banging around.

Had the same experience back in 2011, it sounded like someone dropped a big air conditioning unit on the roof. Then the swaying started.

Absolutely nothing compared to what's coming out of Turkey this morning, just heartbreaking, especially the pre-dawn timing, so many people in their homes asleep.
Indeed. I feel a little bad now after hearing about what happened over there.

Obviously structures arre engineered to withstand earthquakes here in California increasing their chances of not collapsing. Dunno about Turkey & Syria but I doubt it as they're not located on the ring of fire.

It's very sad but if I had to go I would hope it's in my sleep.

There's a "did you feel it" link in the second of those pages I linked. They use that information to learn more about quakes, and particularly their impact on people and structures, things that can't be measured with a seismograph. Might be worth taking a minute or two to fill that page out.

Haven't felt on myself (in the wrong geographic area for them) but I do remember we were living in Salt Lake City when the big earthquake that upset Old Faithful in Yellowstone hit in the early part of the 1980s. My sister and I were sitting at the dining room table doing our home work or maybe just coloring when the light over the table started to sway gently followed a few moments later by a bang when the kitchen counter separated from the wall by an eighth of an inch or so. Super strange at the time and it wasn't until the news later that night that we out the two events together.
I went ahead and did the DYFI on the USGS website, thanks for that :)

East coasters always say "I'd rather deal with annual blizzards instead of being in earthquake country." Looks like you get to deal with both now.

I was on the 11th floor in a Manhattan building years ago, sitting at a computer when I felt what seemed like a small dizzy spell. Found out about an hour later that NYC had a very mild one.
The building had swayed ever so slightly. Strange feeling even on a very small scale.

Yeah, I'll still take blizzards. You's guys have to deal with those fires too :/

Yeah, fuck snakes.
Every winter I ask myself: Why do I live in Wisconsin?, but then I start thinking about some of the tradeoffs for other areas and convince myself to stay.

Snakes, spiders, mountain lions. I would rather worry about ticks and snow for now anyways.

It's horrifying to see thousands of people die under massive crumbling structures.

I do want to say as a silver lining that I think natural disasters are one of the very few circumstances where human spirit seems to shine brightest.

Humans who dedicate themselves to a higher calling, medical personnel, emergency operations, etc. are in full motion. Professionals, public, adults, children, everyone is needed and often appear to jump into action. For a moment, everyone local collectively grieves for the same thing in the same way. Resources are all poured into the same endeavor.

Obviously would rather not have the deaths, but at the very least your news cycle is filled for 6 hours with humans helping humans after planet kills humans instead of humans killing humans helping humans after humans killed humans.

Won't lie. Was still awake. I ran outside thinking a concussion wave just hit the house and thought something exploded.
Yep, I was in my basement, I was awake getting ready for work, which is coincidentally right near the epicenter actually. Definitely had me startled.

Yeah, this is very true.

I love right on top of the industrial train yard. I thought they had a serious accident and wasn't there anymore

I’ve only really encountered one, when I was back in NoVA, probably around 2011 or so. It was small by comparison, probably similar the one in Seneca.

I was at work, felt something, thought the big building AC units just kicked into high gear, then my monitor started shaking - lol.

Peeked out my office, then the head of the department peeked out of his. The building “swayed” a little and we both looked at each other and said “time to get everyone outta here”. We were on the top floor of the building and told everyone to clear out.

It was mild in the end, but freaky nonetheless.

I have never really felt one either in NJ, people talked about feeling that Virginia one in 2011 but it went unnoticed to me.

:wow:ditto, lol. I was in an office building, in Newark, 14th floor! Similar experience. Felt like something more local.
Yeah, Florida is where you really don't want to be if you don't feeling like dying from the habitat.
Currently in FLA.. hopefully I’ll survive until my flight home tomorrow

I'll say a prayer for you.
Only contending with turtles and Mascovy ducks at the moment. Was at the beach earlier, but decided not to wrestle any sharks.
On the west coast where the talking monkeys seem a little more sane ;)
