Does Paulson make the best Chip?? (3 Viewers)

Here are some pics of the well used square-in-circle mold (or CSQ) chips.

Edit - these are not the same chips on the left and right (the ones on the left have a hotstamp of REH on both sides). But same mold, and relatively same weight -- around 7-8 grams per chip.

Per http://www.antiquegamblingchips.com/molddesign_geometric.htm, the MD-52 mold is:
SQUARE IN CIRCLE -- a square in a circle, repeated 16 times. 1948-present. Portland Card Co., Portland OR. and Penn Specialty Co. Atlantic Standard Molding, Inc., Portland ME, has the mold for sale on its web site the last time I looked (Oct. 2000)..........The chip at the left is for sale here. BPOE Elks Club lodge #1413 is in Corvallis OR. The reverse side of the chip refers to the 1950 state convention there. ... ..... As of October 2015, the mold is still being produced in Maine at Classic Poker Chips company, a company that took over from Atlantic Standard Molding in 2013-2014. All their molds can be seen here. The mold is licensed for use in Nevada as of 2014 onwards.

These chips seem much older than 2015, so they were likely made by ASM or even the Portland Card Co or Penn Specialty Co. prior to that.

I love CPC, but Paulson have better and more colours. The weight is better and the finish is better, and there aren't the inconsistencies that you get with CPC.

Trks are great, but they also suffer from some consistency issues. You can't deny it.

1. Paulson
2. Trk
3. BCC (questionable at times though)
4. CPC

All fantastic products. Like I said in the other thread, I'm about to order another CPC set and I encourage anyone else to consider it.

Listen, I love TRK's; I'd kill for a set. But nobody ever mentions TRK's inferior edge spots. Paulson edge spots are bold and brash. TRK's have these timid little baby edge spots.
Not all of us look at our cousins the same way.
I get it. :ROFLMAO: Paulsons are really nice!
I’ve got some really nice cousins as well.

So... earlier I saw a couple comments in the HOF2020 post... @Chippy McChiperson responded to @Perthmikes comment about Paulson being the greatest chip... I took the time to write this response but decided not to thread crap with yet another one of my awful books... I'm sure the debate has happened 100 times on the forum and please excuse my ignorance on the subject, and by no means am I trying to stir the pot or start anything... but it has been said several times this used to be a site for discussions and not just sales ads... if you're boarded and have nothing to do please take the time to read this one... I would love to hear your own opinions. Mike, Bill nothing but respect to both of you and not attempting to play middle man... just my thoughts on the subject.

As far as the debate of are Paulsons truly the worlds greatest chip? I bring it up regularly Bill that @krafticus Speak ECs get countless hours of felt time and they are still near new condition, also just amazed with the feel of the CSQ mold! If I was planning to run a larger card room and honestly had the Choice Between Paulson Or CPCs, I believe I would choose CPC. It is absolutely a matter of opinion, but it seems like the CPCs are a bit more dense.

Still very new to the chipping world, but I have herd it many times that Paulsons will last you a life time!! But recently I basically gave away some 98 CDIs that elwere total bike tires, how is that possible in the home market? Easy the chips aren't very dense, they wear pretty quickly! Also seen several times where people use mint chips for shuffle stacks and within a month or 2 the square sharp edges are rounded off. And let's not even go there on flea bites on THC chips! I have yet to witness any of this on CPC chips, I'm sure they are out there but I haven't come across any yet!

I will say that before you touch any Paulson chips you know what they feel like and that it is consistent every single time, a softer weighted clay feel. I have noticed there are variances in the CPC chip not only set to set but even within molds. Some just feel very plastic like similar to the non leaded TRKs... the difference there is night an day.

To be honest I was skeptical of buying the Silver Tounged Devils... not because of the design but I haven't been impressed with the CPC scrown samples that I have held thus far... but when the chips came in CPC knocked this one out of the park! The chips are amazing!! Not light, no plastic feel... honestly much better than I expected!!

Recently @BarrieJ3 has been having his samples sent to us to cut down on shipping over seas. @FordPickup92 and I have had the opportunity to check out soo many amazing CPC chips! I couldn't wait to finally check out @Chippy McChiperson "Bill's Hous of Bluffs" shaped inlays, beautiful local based art work. Freaking bright ass day glow colors you almost need sun glasses for, very tastefully put together. Absolutely nothing but praise on these chips... until I picked them up. We all know the day glow colors are obviously lighter and that you can't add brass flake to them, the result unfortunately to me is they feel a bit on the plastic side... I still can't wait to get a chance to check them out and shuffle a few barrels and spend some felt time with them!

In closing, I can't say who makes the best chips, the world says Paulson... but based off of what? Because they sell the most? Because they had the capitol to really corner the market and wipe out the competition just like any business sets their goals for? Is it possible they were afraid another company like BCC would have knocked them out of first? Yes BCC had a thousand quality control issues but man have you ever got the chance to feel a barrel of Inlaid GCR (wonder why the fracs are $400 a rack? Put your hands on them... you will understand), I have spent 4-6 hours a day cleaning, washing, oiling, drying and shuffling chips for the last 9 months... insane??? Yes it is! An expert absolutely not! Just compassionate if not obsessed with this amazing hobby. Brie and I own over 15k of what is considered quality chips from all of the large manufacturers and I can't say with a clear mind what I consider to be the "best" chip Hands Down...

My favorite would be old school leaded Scrown TRKs, followed by the BCC "T" mold, CPC CSQ, then Paulson but that is just a prefrence...

Feel free to share your opinions, hope everyone is safe out there and that well all make it through this! As always my grammar is awful and sorry for the book!

Fellow Chipper Ben
Come on my friend...you know the answer!! Paulsons are wanna be TRKs. :ROFLMAO::p

I do believe that to be true @Forty4 but also Paulson was a spin off of TRK... all in the family... but BCC was producing definitely lower quality chips and casinos were changing over based off price (again I believe and from my reserch)... many of the BCC chips like the Garden Citys are just bad... feel like plastic... I took a $2 BCC GC started cutting with a knife and all I found was plastic... maybe just high resin I have herd but try that with a paulson... it won't cut!

Anyways I don't believe that anyone would argue that TRK. BCC. And Paulson are alike in any way... huge difference in each one.

As far as lead I absolutely agree that all of those chips were much better than non leaded... those times are gone. Even though part of this is discussing closed Chip manufacturers (I probably shouldn't have used TRK or BCC) current clay chips which is obviously very limited! Is it easy to say current Paulsons (both THC and RHC) are better than what CPC is putting out there??
+1 this ^^^^^

They are all TRK wanna bees. But I might have already mentioned that. :)

Old school, leaded textured shaped inlay Paulsons are the best chip in my mind. TRK's run a close second (I've grown to love them, wasn't a fan at first).

I would say that there are 2 things that could be game changers to this hierarchy in my mind. To me the shortcoming of CPC's is weight, and color ranges. If CPC could add weight to their chips without brass flakes and have a more diverse color range like Paulson or even close then they could easily take the number one spot because of the ability to get customs.

The other thing that could change the game is if Paulson ever opened up to allow customs (never gonna happen but ya know). If you could make customized Paulsons they would take the number 1 spot.

I'm not a chip snob though, I love the whole range. Each is great in their own unique way!

here is my list....

leaded paulson thcs> leaded trks> non leaded paulson thcs > paulson rhcs> bcc> cpc> all the rest.
I’ll mostly agree with this. Bonus points for shaped inlays. :)

Some custom ASM/CPC sets have knocked it out of the park...but imagine what they could have been with Paulson color and spot options.
