i just got an email from Bernie. How is it possible that our system is so corrupt that this is an issue?

Rob,

Before our nearly 1,900 delegates can vote at the Democratic convention next month, we need to actually get them to Philadelphia.

Here's the thing: our delegates are not wealthy campaign contributors. They're not party insiders or establishment elites. They're working folks, and it's not easy for many of them to fly to Philly and stay in hotels for a week.

We really need to have all of our delegates at the Democratic convention because we expect there could be critical votes for the party platform and electoral process. We'd hate to fall short on these votes because some of our delegates couldn't afford to go to the convention.

That's why I'm asking you directly:

Make a $2.70 contribution to our campaign before Thursday's midnight FEC deadline to help our delegates come to the Democratic convention so we can have our entire political revolution represented next month in Philadelphia.

You'd be shocked at how expensive it is to attend the Democratic convention. It can cost more than $4,000 per delegate!

Hotels are booked months in advance, and then resold at higher prices. Lobbyists throw all sorts of fancy parties. It's easy for the political establishment to navigate this and know whom to call to find the right way in. That, or they're wealthy enough to pay for themselves.

Our political revolution is not made up of people like that. Our folks need help to get to the convention and stay there.

Rob, you can make sure all our delegates represent Bernie at the Democratic convention. Can you help us before Thursday's midnightFEC fundraising deadline?

Contribute $2.70 to our campaign and make sure that Bernie's delegates can get to the Democratic convention next month.

Thank you for stepping up to help the members of our political revolution.

In solidarity,

Jeff Weaver

Delegates are responsible for getting themselves to the convention and paying all their expenses. The political professionals get some or all of their costs covered by the party or their campaigns. The rest of the delegates pay their own way. This is one of the questions asked before someone is put on the list of proposed delegates - you are asked to swear you intend to go and that you can pay the costs.

I have been a delegate to the Republican State Convention and it was that way for lower level delegates too. Who else would be paying the costs? Even the winning campaigns do not normally pay the costs for their delegates.

I have a hard time imagining many Sander's delegates are financially unable to attend the national convention because they normally would have been vetted out as unsuitable due to the possibility they couldn't afford to go.

I would think the party should pay for the delegates. It's a function of the party to have a delegate system. So much money is squandered on campaigning, why can't the parties make arrangements in advance to cover at least housing for delegates during the convention.

Why would they do that though when the delegates don't actually mean anything in the end? I understand that the vast majority of the time the party will nominate who the delegates "want', but they don't have to, it's all just a show when it comes straight down to it. Just another thing about our political "process" that pisses me off, more smoke and mirrors. :(

We should squander more money on delegates (that admittedly have precious little real impact) because there is so much money already squandered on the campaign?

If you can't afford to go, don't be a delegate. It's not like they were drafted into this. I have a real problem with donations going to delegates so they can party it up at the convention - it's not like even 50% of their time is spent doing serious political things that will happen the average person. It's a hackathon. Fuck those fucking guys.

Over $9 mil on hand at the beginning of this month. $4,000 per person times 2000 people = $8 million.

Idea#1 - step up Bernie!

This ^ If Bernie wants them there, Bernie can pay for 'em.

Going to be lazy and just say: QFT

Back when the Founders lived, getting called for public duty was a burden, but one you undertook for the good of our great, young nation. Now they want to get put in overpriced hotels on someone else's dime? FUCK THOSE GUYS. Seriously.

Here in Cleveland even the sleaziest of sleaze bag motels were asking $400+ a night during RNC week if they even had any openings. Way too much money in the process but I don't propose to have a better alternative.

In general, there are many more people who want to be national convention delegates than there are positions. I would have been thrilled to have been offered a national convention slot paid for out of my pocket, but I wasn't even in the running. I doubt there are very many Sanders delegates who aren't coming due to finances. And should a vacancy happen, there will be a waiting list.

The fund raising letter seems most likely to be a sham rather than a true appeal to get poor folks to the convention -=- DrStrange
