I saw a question about this on X (or Twitter if you prefer), and I was curious as to what people's thoughts were.

Daylight Savings Time starts this weekend, and as we all know that means seeing the clocks forward an hour. That means a later sunrise, but also a later sunset.

Would you rather keep things as they are, or switch to either permanent Daylights Savings Time or Standard Time?

Permanent DST means we'd have sunrises as late as 8:26 in December, but wouldn't have the sun setting at 4:30.

Permanent Standard Time means we'd have sunrises as early as 4:39 in June, and the sun would set around 7:37 at its peak.

The more interesting question, but more difficult to poll is “what is your 2nd preference”. I have a hunch that most people prefer either permanent option over the status quo

Also, time is an artificial construct, as evidenced by us moving it around.

Do like New Mexico, we got rid of constraints like that, shit gets done when it gets done, probably mañana. But if you care enough and shepherd it yourself, you can get stuff done here on your time, not some arbitrary made up prison. Initiative takes the cake here, not an appointment.

Prefer permanent DST, but would fine with permanent PST, also.
I’m fine with, either. Would rather stick with one and keep it. The constant switching back and forth messing me up.

I don't personally like DST due to impact to sleep patterns plus I was a software dev long ago enough where it was a real PITA - BUT I think it's got a net positive safety impact for kids getting on school busses in the AM with morning light vs. dark/darker so I'd have a hard time advocating for a change.

I always heard that it was a corporate conspiracy to save money on air conditioning.

Of course this was before air conditioning was invented

Standard time for life, and it's a hill I'm willing to die on.

There's nothing like waking up for work (or school) in the dark in the winter, slogging through the first hour of your day... in the dark....

Forgetting the time change screwing with sleep cycles and the health detriments with that, the increased number of accidents that will occur with permanent DST will see people changing their minds on this if it's implemented.

It always comes up when most got to DST in the spring, probably because folks are sick and tired of winter. It's a reaction to the season and there's no deep thought of the bigger picture issues that would come with it.
