I'm thinking about buying a poker table (oval for 6-8 people), so my question is: do you prefer tables with or without cup holders (with a side table, for example)? I can imagine that a cup holder can sometimes be annoying, right?

Thank you for your answers, I have similar thoughts. I think sidetables will be my way to go

Is it less social with side tables? ;)
Can be. Yes.

The drink holders give the vibe that it is ok to drink... side carts can still be used, which we do.
Not everyone likes to use the drink holder, some do. Also, drink holders help guests know where to line up seat, especially at a full table.

But isn't it uncomfortable when many people want to cross their arms on the pad, for example?

My last few table builds have been without cup holders and I provide lots of tray tables. Everyone agrees it’s way better. They have a place for an empty rack, their phone, keys, empties if they’re drinking, snacks, whatever and the table stays clean as a whistle.

Note the table in the top right. You can buy these for $40 on Amazon and they have wheels, adjust in height, spin, etc. I planned on cutting holes in them for cup holders, but players agreed they like them flat for a variety of items. And I can’t even buy materials for $40, so what a steal!

If anyone wants a link for the side tables

My OG table has no cup holders. I have 3 trays and people A. Don't use them, put the drinks on coasters and are liable to knock one over every game night or 2. Use the trays and knock stuff off them on the regular.
Cup holders alleviate all of it.

Cup Holders all the way.
Its a social event at my place

Actually, @Roslindale has a point. I have both with and without, and when I'm drinking bourbon, I like my glass right next to me. Call me crazy, but it feels mor social.

Yeah...I thought I was off my rocker too...LOL. So, I redid my table with cup holders (removed cups and refurbished the rail). All good...no more cup holders. That lasted about 3 months. Tore it down and refurbished it again with cup holders back in.

My recommendation is to go without and if you like it then problem solved. You won't ever miss the pure bliss of having your drink next to you. (:

CHEERS good luck!!

No built-in cupholders. If you don't have a raised rail, slide-under cupholders (have a tab that slide under the rail) are excellent. You only have a cupholder if you want one.

Good deep cupholders are difficult to defeat - they're pretty much spillproof. Shallow cupholders are the worst.
Are shallow cupholders even cupholders?🤔 I used to call them suicide cupholders.

I love the look of a table WITHOUT cupholders. Unfortunately my poker room is tiny so carts aren't an option ergo cupholders in my table. Deep brass ones so at least they almost look cool?

(Yes there's a hocky puck under Bob-omb so he can watch the action until felted)

Turns out, I have no decent pics of my cupholders… maybe this one to show the depth for the can.

I got the ‘deep’ brass cupholders that are wider at the top. You can’t knock over a drink easily with these. I don’t have space for all the side tables, and the under table rotating cupholders had mixed reviews here, so went in the rail:

The shallow barrington ones are more risk, but I don’t regret getting these in the rail.

GL!

These are a lot of chips.

This is always a fun discussion. Unless you have a very spacious setup where the drink carts sit (generally) next to players, it's cups in the table all the way. If I have to push my chair back and turn all the way around to get to my drink, I'm not a happy camper. I'll more than likely just hold my drink at that point and put my glass on the felt/rail on the rare occasion I have a hand worth playing lol.

But I play cards largely as an excuse to drink, so there's that....

I really didn't want cup holders in the table or the rail and wasn't a fan of carts either so I went for an in between solution - same as the slide ins mentioned but fixed position, though removable. 2-3 years in and zero spillage.
Amazing!

My 2 cents... because I detest spilling on the table, I'd opt for no cup holders. Seen it happen where the people drinking are tipsy and thus less coordinated, so even the act of putting a drink in the holder, taking it out, or reaching for chips causes a spill on the felt. Even when the cup holder is deep.

But the option shown by @Nymor seems like an excellent solution. Otherwise, side table for sure for me at least.
