We have met the minimum order quantity and this Group Buy for Stardust Poker Mansion quarters is moving forward!

Here is the final design:

Final Details are:

• 39mm chip
• FDL mold
• #414 edge spots (level 2)
• DG Peacock
• DG Yellow edge spots in 414 pattern
• 1-1/16" inlay (to match SPM cash)

Price: $2.02 per chip (plus shipping/fees) - pricing is based on DG Peacock and 4 edge spots. Also, this will be a "true group buy" and chips will be sold at cost plus shipping and PayPal fees. I do not want to make a profit on this. Here are some quick prices for popular quantities:

• 5 = $10.10 plus shipping & fees
• 20 = $40.40 plus shipping & fees
• 100 = $202.00 plus shipping & fees
• 200 = $404.00 plus shipping & fees
• 250 = $505.00 plus shipping & fees
• 300 = $606.00 plus shipping & fees

*Minimum order of 5 chips is required. Sorry - I just don't want to deal with shipping and mailing labels for one chip.

I will be doing two collections for this GB. First payment will be for chip costs and is due immediately after the Group Buy closes (in January)/ A second payment will be for shipping costs after the chips arrive.

I have to be honest, I still don't understand the $10k-$15k mold fees.

I go to a drone shop here in Denver, and the guy does custom 3D part making. He has a CNC machine in the back and only charges $200-$300 to make the molds from aluminum blocks (designed on computer software), and then makes the parts out of his own polymer/plastic.

I wouldn't think a chip mold would be much different. 3D scan the Stardust chip... Slap it in a CNC... And voila.

Understanding of the complex process used to manufacture chips.

The molds are huge, built to withstand extremely high temperatures and pressures, and are filled with fittings/channels/cavities that supply/manage internal steam used for heating, plus typically 20 pairs of cups per mold. It's not just some fancied up piece of aluminum block.

But, we're not talking about the "complex process use to manufacture chips." We're talking about 3D scanning and CNC machining, which has become a pennies-on-the-dollar process in 2015.

I'm not following the pricing, given that I can make the most complex part I like for a few hundred dollars and some time in 3D design software.

Well I have a close family member who runs a machine shop. I have spoken to him at great length about building molds. Keeping in mind we weren't sure what the mold and cups are actually made from the process to build should be much cheaper than say even 5 years ago thanks to the availability of cnc and cad. I would actually like to know what kind of metal is used.
A far as making cups by using a chip to make a negative....this would keep costs way down but may not be legal because someone must still own the originals, perhaps?

Okay then, how about this: You can't use 3D scanning and CNC machining to make complex chip-making mold hardware. To many internal components and external attachment points.

Ok... Maybe I'm coming at this from the wrong angle...

It would seem that after you take the time/labor/energy/cost to setup the 3D design in software once, you could start offering custom cup making services at a greatly reduced price, which would be (ideally) offset by increased volume in custom mold-design orders in ensuing years.

I would suspect that there COULD be a lot of applications to the chip-manufacturing process, but there would need to be a meeting of the minds that just hasn't happened yet, as this is such a niche market. If the right person cared (i.e. someone with enough knowledge of both chip manufacturing processes AND 3D machining processes) a better way could be devised, but that person doesn't exist. And given the nature of our market, paying someone enough to care (i.e. paying an expert consultant in 3D machining to learn enough about molds/chips to even begin to formulate a plan) wouldn't be cost-effective.

Not to derail...I own no stardust and was coming to be envious...

My father is a "3D" designer/modeler (I do some myself ) I can ask him...he has years of experience in making parts and then molds for the auto industry...there is a trick to mold release angles heating and cooling channels, supply lines etc...he is also a poker guy but doesn't collect chips...I'm sure he'd model a design if the collective hive had an idea, especially if I did part of it with him as a father and son thing...we'd use Siemens NX (unigraphics) that may bring the cost down some not having to pay the design fee...but generally molds are expensive.

But that's a lot of coordination with David S...and he'd have to be a willing partner...plus chip pre orders...

It sounds worse the more I spew.

If there is, I'll be honest, I won't be the one running it. Once I get my chips, and ship the other GB memvers there's, I'm tapping out of this GB.

But I'm sure David Spragg will run them again upon request. And I'm happy to share the artwork (assuming I get permission to do so from the parties involved).
