Clay vs Ceramic (1 Viewer)

A lot of discussion on the forum... But... I like both for different reasons.

For you, personally, what is it about one vs the other that settles the debate in your mind?

What specific thing makes you choose clay over ceramic or vice versa?

Is it the feel? Price? Look? Something else?

Ceramics are an open canvas, you can create any custom graphic you want and custom side text/ graphics.
To make a ceramic look like a normal poker chip, your not utilizing the medium to its full potential.

…unless you prefer the look of a traditional “normal” poker chip. I have a set of DDLM ceramics and they’re great, but it’s also nice to have a set that has the clay-chip look, customized fully, and a much better price than clays.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my clays and would prefer if all my chips were like them regarding feel and sound. But the price, durability and customization of ceramics make them very attractive for many situations.

With ceramic, you can get a fully customized chip at a consistently low price point.

With clay, you get a casino-grade product made with traditional materials and processes, at wildly variable price points. They might just keep their value going forward.

I totally get that, nothing wrong with getting something special that works for your needs (especially for the cost and durability). My point was since the medium allows you to replicate an existing look, just shows how flexible it is and how much more potential there is.

I like clay because I prefer the old school look and feel.

If I was on a budget I'd get Tina hybrids from Justin's group but to replicate what I like.

I find it difficult to get excited over ceramics. I had a B&G set I really liked and the hybrids are nice, but neither come close to clay chips

I have to admit I'm a sucker for clay, but there is something about the feel of ceramics that is also appealing. I like how different they feel and sound.

It makes it harder to settle on what I want for my next set. I wish one stood out more than the other to me.

Each clay chip is unique...each ceramic chip is identical....and ceramic is not clay shuffle wise (by a mile)

I was perfectly happy with my cheap, generic, composite set... Then I found this place and started learning what was out there

I blame you guys.

Clay chips just feel better. Ceramic chips are fine and an acceptable alternative for a cheaper price.

Ceramic can look great with art that takes up the whole face. Ceramic are also usually significantly less expensive (Tina, etc). Chipco is higher end, but no longer available for customs. Regarding wear, ceramic feels great after very brief break in. Though through extended use, they can wear pretty badly where the image starts to fade away slowly. They also get dings and bytes, seem to not be as durable as clay.

Clay on the other hand takes longer to break in, but tends to look good for the life of the chip. Though the edges can get rounded, bike tires even though the art doesn't change much. Depending on the MFG, they will last a long time, especially in a home game. Bike tires will only happen from heavy use. Clay is higher end.

I like ceramics for durability, customization and affordability.

Clays feel amazing and give an authentic feel to any card game

This is what I'm talking about. Here's a pic I found on eBay. They just get little dents and nicks.

A game I play at has been using Nevada Jacks skulls for around 15+ years. Some of those have had chunks come off the face of the chip. Don't think I've seen that with other ceramics though.

And one more from eBay. They just get a 'chewed up' look to them with heavy use.

Whereas with clay, they can get beat up. Though get rounded, but tend to still have a good appearance when cleaned.

On the subject of cleaning though, ceramics are much easier to clean.
