Afternoon! Still learning about chip styles and manufacturing and how this affects FMV in general. I see 2 different styles from Santa Fe...

Are these chips both plastic, clay or some alloy? In general, which style is more collectable or command a higher price?

Thanks,
FlushMD

The Suits mold is a plastic chip made by Bud Jones. The Horse Head Right mold is a traditional clay type chip made by ASM (I think). The clay chip on the right is a far superior chip.

The Bud Jones 8 suits mold above is unslugged, very light, and was also made available for private purchase with hot stamps. The plastic is of much lower quality than other BJ lines used for casinos.

And yet they handle great.
They don't come up much on this site, so I don't even know what they'd sell for. But I wouldn't mind playing with them.

Does the lower quality material affect the value? I'm seeing both chips for roughly the same price. $3-$8 (on eBay).
Talk to the singles collectors.
What singles are worth is generally based on scarcity and appearance as far as I know. What singles are listed for on eBay is based on nonsense as far as I can tell.
But I wouldn't pay $3 for the pair.

I'm not sure I would say great, but better than some cheap plastic chips. They are very light in weight and are not really collectable. The HHR (Horse Head Right) is a classic mold and is made by the old school method of a true compression molded chip.

To get a better idea of value, search "sold" e-bay auctions rather than live auctions. In general, most everything chip related on e-bay is overpriced

On eBay I do check the sold prices. Another thing I look for is the auction vs the buy-it-now outcome. Sometimes, the auction has very little bids and the chip goes for barely over face value. For current listings, the variance in price is quite wild. Some $5 chips listed for $50+, etc. I often wonder if those chips ever sell or if the free listing is just a promo for their storefront or account.

These two chips really aren't worth that much. A few bucks each at most. Only thing they have going for them is that they're from the original Santa Fe before Stations took it over. The Bud Jones ones generally would be less value, in my opinion, compared to the HHR version. If you had both of these chips at the same price next to each other I'd be a buyer of the HHR version 100%.

Obviously other people have differences on what they would go after, but that's how I see it.

Feel free to reach out to me about an singles pricing questions or anything similar. Always willing to help others in this hobby!

Hey @FlushMD i just saw your listing for two racks of those. I would never crap on somebody else’s classified ad, but since I did comment nicely on those chips here, I’m going add this to that - all factors considered, including what else is available in the current market, my opinion is that used, gray, 8-suit chips in playable quantity would be reasonably priced in the 20 cent range.
