I'm auctioning off 1 sample set of my recent find - a chipset from "Casino Grand Maksim" in Istanbul, Turkey.

yeniden-istanbul-gecelerinin-bir-numarasi-listelist1.jpg

This auction is for one of each denomination, so:
1x $500 chip (43mm)
1x $1000 chip (43mm)
1x $5000 plaque

Due to age all of them have some scratches, the yellow color on $1000 chips is starting to fade.
I will cherrypick the nicest ones for the winner.

The chips are very likely Bud Jones made, the plaque is definitely Bourgogne et Grasset (B&G).

Some history and background info i was able to find:

The Casino Grand Maksim, more known as the Maksim Gazino, was originally founded in 1921 by afroamerican businessman Frederick Bruce Thomas - to be the first jazz club in europe.
"Gazino" in turkish doesnt directly translate to Casino as a gambling facility as we know it.
In the past century "Gazino"s in turkey were what we would see as a nightclub today.
Maksim Gazino closed in 1927 due to debts of its owner.

Decades later, in 1961, Fahrettin Aslan, later known as the "King of Gazinos", reopened Maksim.
Their big ballrooms were stage to the most famous artists of their time - there was no gambling at all.
In 1985 turkey legalized gambling. Until 1998, when gambling was completely banned, there were 68 casinos, that were a over $1 billion business.
Maksim wasnt known for being a gambling business, but for their nightlife culture.

Unfortunately there is absolutely nothing to find about the casino, the chips or anything similar, only a short newspaper report of the casino being closed in '98 alongside all other ones.

Chipguide has 58 turkish casinos, but nothing from this one.

As i don't know how to price these, i'm going to auction this sample set here.

  1. STARTING BID: $1
  2. Bids must be placed using numbers (no images), in whole dollars, and in minimum increments of $1
  3. NO RESERVE. The Starting Bid of this auction will be treated as the Reserve Price.
  4. All bids are to be placed openly in this thread. No bids via PM/Conversation.
  5. No bid edits or bid retractions permitted. (note: ALL edits are logged instantly)
  6. Auction will use the '5 minutes after last closing bid rule'. Highest bid at 4pm, EST, May 8th will win unless there is a bid within 5 minutes of closing time - then the closing time will be within 5 minutes after the latest bid was posted. A bid at the close time is NOT a valid bid. Since seconds are not displayed on post timestamps, these examples will be used as a reference.
  7. I reserve the right to: 1) cancel the auction if no bids have been made; 2) edit the listing to correct errors or clarify rules as needed.
  8. PCF (its Owner, Admins, and Moderators) are in no way responsible for any actions in this auction.
  9. Shipping Terms: Germany $1.50, Rest of World $7.80
  10. Payment Terms: Paypal Goods & Services, i eat the fee

happy bidding!

as mentioned in auction $1000 chips yellow color is faded, this one has the least marks of fading on the side.

plaque is #176

Are you sure the 1k is originally yellow? Looks to me like they used to be white and have yellowed. If that's the case perhaps you should auction the whitest one you have. Just a suggestion so don't take it the wrong way.

Nice find and glwa

No light yellow for BJ. Those were white and either yellowed over time or are dirty (nicotine tar, grime etc.) or both. Take a magic eraser to one and see what happens. Or pop a label off and see what color is underneath.

Gold glitter ring FTW! GLWA

here’s how big the difference is.
unfortunately it’s taking lots of time as the dirt / nicotine tar doesn’t come off easy

and here’s some direct comparisons of different shades of yellow. the mold has some irregularities as you can see, these are present on all chips similarly.
i guess 1980‘s bud jones molds weren’t perfect...
