Hi all.

So we play mostly just tournaments, but some have asked if we could try cash games to see if this is something more of the group could play occasionally. I'm interesting in trying it out, but I have no set that is great for that. I could use the tournament chips I hope just to test a game with f.ex 5-6 players..
Low stakes, I was thinking 0.25-0.50, or 0.50-0.50. If it's good, maybe eventually 0.50-1.0.. :) And then of course I would buy a dedicated cash set to allow me to run a cash game for 8 players properly.

My tournament set has these chips:
T100 – 165 pcs
T500 – 50 pcs
T1000 – 125 pcs
T5000 – 120 pcs
T25000 – 40 pcs
Total: 500 chips.

Not exactly sure how you'd achieve a .25/.50 or .50/.50 with the chips you have there. If you had T25's I'd say it's doable but not ideal, obviously.

If there's some way to mentally block out the denom on the chips you could just use the colors as a certain denomination. Confusing, and again, not really ideal.

People will chime in a probably recommend you have two different sets, one for cash, one for tournament, always. Sound advice.

For a short handed game, you can probably get away with just /10. So 500 =50c, etc.

If you want more smaller chips, just make the T100 the small blind. It's not perfect, but it'll work as a test.

I've played with 25 as 0.25, 5 as 0.5, and 100 as 1.00. as long as no one is incredibly drunk, it's easy enough

Yeah obviously it is less than ideal (and again, it's just to test, I will of course get a dedicated set asap if people like playing cash).

What are preferred chip set breakdowns for a 8 player setup (we will never be more than that) at those low stakes?
Do you prefer 0.25-0.50 or 0.50-0.50 (and why)?
Eventually I guess we might move up slightly in stakes, though not much as our group like the "low stakes" of our poker nights
(limited you can lose on one night for casual poker).

question, when you reference 0.25/0.50 and 0.50/0.50, do you mean in Norwegian Krones?

My initial thought would be to pay 1/1. 1/1 NOK would still be a rather small cash game. What are your usual tourney buyins? You can have buyins of 100kr for 1/1.

Use the T1000 as 1s, T5000s as 5s, and T25000s as 25s. Total bank of 1725kr which should be enough if you play small with 6-8 players. You can use the T100s as 100s in case you actually need to add a couple later in the night.

T1000 – 125 pcs. 125kr
T5000 – 120 pcs. 600kr
T25000 – 40 pcs 1000kr

I'm about to deal with the same challenge. Doing our first cash game and I have NO idea what stakes the group will like.

Luckily we're still on (undenominated) dice chips until I can order custom. So we can use them for anything. We always have a TV with our tournament clock and a chip value chart, so nagging about denoms has never actually been a problem at all.

This kind of set is great for every other experiment too. We're still working on starting stacks/breakdowns, learning our typical rebuy rate, etc - without breaking the bank on a real set yet.

how much is the buy-in for your tournament?

It's $15 right now but I've recently learned that the group doesn't mind higher stakes. We wanted to introduce a bounty and they all voted for the highest bounty amount I suggested, $5.

So we may bump up the main buy-in next season.

maybe $0.10/$0.20 blinds. $20 buy in.

maybe $0.10/$0.20 blinds. $20 buy in.

I was thinking something like that too, except I think I've mostly seen a 200bb buy-in suggested. That would put us at 5c/10c/$20.

Plus, starting lower just seems safer. Can always bump up over time. But again, planning that way makes it tough to buy a chip set, as OP is learning too.

Yes. So it is low, but I want to have room for people to do some re-buys/top-ups, and I don't imagine most of them would want to spend more than around 400 NOK for the night. (though I would not mind being positively surprised :p)

Usual tourney buy in is 250 NOK, so just ~25 USD.
Also do a separate higher buy in one at 400 NOK sometimes.

Thanks for that input, I suppose a 1/1 could work. Hopefully people will at least put in a few more buy-ins. =)

might aswell do 1/2

Regardless of what chips to use, setting win/loss expectations is important if you want a sustainable cash game.

Set the stakes based on your current tournament buy in and make it clear that players should bring multiple buy ins so the game doesn't break up early if players bust out.

As an example, if your current tournament buy in is $100/night, I'd communicate:

- .25/.25 blinds
- buy in for $20-$40
- bring at least 3 buy ins for the night
- expect to win/lose about 2 buy ins.

This way players are risking around the same amount of money.

$0.10/$0.10 blinds works too, its what i use

I was going to try and achieve the same thing with a tournament set. I think it will be alittle easier for since I will be getting T25s.
You could try fix limit to start, then every chip would be the same amount, if they will let you that is ahaha

Yeah, that's one advantage of going with a T25 tournament set, in a pinch you can turn it into a cash set.

A couple of great group buys going on for those who want to get a nice cash set!

I think your best bet is T1000 = 1 and do either 0.50-0.50 or 0.50-1 blinds.

It's going to still be tight, you can accommodate 8 starting stacks of 6/12/7 of 0.50/1/5 (50) and a couple "leftover stacks." One 2/14/7, one 0/15/7, and five more of 0/0/10.

So 15 buy ins of 50 before you tap the T25K chips which will give you another 25 buy-ins of 50.

So you could one way or another fashion 40 buy-ins of $50 or 20 buy-ins of $100 using the T1000 = 1 method. But I just don't see another credible option.

Yeah seems to be a good choice. Thanks.

So, as for the cash set.
What breakdown would you have in the set for 8 players and plenty of chips with 0.5-0.5/0.5-1/1-1 etc stakes?
Should I buy 0.25-1-5-20 chips regardless if I have 0,25 blind?
Or could you run f.ex a 0.5-2-10 set?

Or could you run f.ex a 0.5-2-10 set?
I would advice against this.

As for the other question, I would go with 0.25 to have 0.25/50 if you want BB=0.5. However, I've tried both 0.5/1 and 1/1 and I prefer the latter by a mile! I couldn't stand bets of 17.50!! And yes, people do it! "I see your 17.50.....[dramatic pause]... and I raise you another 22.............. and 50!!"
(Whoever thinks the string bet is the issue there is wrong!)

When you are ready to buy a cash set, I would choose either

0.25/1/5 (and plan to spread 0.25-0.25, 0.25-0.50, and 1-1)
or 0.50/1/5 (and plan to spread 0.50-0.50, 0.50-1)

Pro of 0.25/1/5: More downward compatibility to 0.25-0.25 if you think your stakes will get that small.
Pro of 0.50/1/5: You need considerably fewer 0.50 chips compared to 0.25 chips since the jump is just to 2x and the 0.50 chips mostly get used for blinds. Change making with halves is also easier than with quarters because it's always a 1 for 1 swap.

I personally do 0.50/1/5 for my games. But either breakdown will work.

I would suggest at the very least 200 singles and fives. Do 100 quarters if you choose quarters, otherwise, you can do 60 halves and leave room for extra singles or fives in your set.

Example 600 chip sets.

100/200/200/80/20 of 0.25/1/5/25/100
60/220/220/80/20 of 0.50/1/5/25/100

if you go to 800 chips or 1000 chips, i would add equal quantities of singles and fives to the above. For the range of stakes you are suggesting, those will be your two "workhorse chips."

Hope this helps.

You can absolutely run a cash game using a tournament set. It just requires a small change in thinking.

Have a standard "buy-in" for your cash game, and restrict players to buying in for this amount. For this buy-in, they get a "starting stack" of tournament chips. That stack can be absolutely anything you want, but I'd make sure it has a pretty large amount of chips, like two or three barrels, but that's really a matter of preference as to how many chips your players like to have on the table.

Whenever someone busts out, they can buy back in with another standard buy-in and get another starting stack (or the equivalent in larger denominations, if desired).

When someone wants to cash out and go home, convert their tournament chips back to cash using the magical power of math.

With this mindset, the cash game is sort-of like a tournament where a) the blinds never go up and b) you can have unlimited rebuys and c) you can leave any time even without busting out and d) you always get paid no matter where you finish as long as you have chips when you leave.

Ok so I had my first game now. Was 6 handed. It was fun, we did 0.5/1 with the occasional straddles. At the end we did 1/1, which people seemed to favor vs 0.5/1. So I think going forward we will do 1/1 as the standard, and we can opt to do 1/2 f.ex we like like sometimes.

RFI were generally on 3x, with some limping now and then. Not many 3 bets pre.

With 1/1 we can drop the 0.5 chip, and just do 1/5/25 set f.ex.
1 Kr – 200 pcs
5 Kr – 300 pcs
25 Kr – 100 pcs
= 600 pcs.
