Can a set be a "GRAIL" set if you have to quantify what kind of GRAIL set it is? (2 Viewers)

Can a set really be a GRAIL set if it needs stipulations?

  • YES, it is the best type of that set. i.e. grail ceramic set, grail dice chip set, grail CC, etc...

  • NO, If a set needs anything more than being called a GRAIL set then it isn't a grail set.

  • There is no GRAIL set so none of it matters!

  • I like Polls and don't want to answer the question really so I will choose this.

My head hurts after reading that.

FWIW, blue is only the best color if it is on the one dollar chip. That's a fact!
YALL ARE CRAZY.

Well, that's normal for me plastering rando pics. What's different from any other day on PCF?

sheeeesh..........I know this. Anyone that has read your posts more than twice already know this lol. I was referencing the color of your one dollar chips. I guess a joke isn't funny if you have to splain it.

I don't joke about poker chips... Always serious....

I did my 2 rules for a "Grail Set" - can't be traded and sold publicly/regularly (I get an auction for a grail set, would expect $10kish+ for a full set), and can't just be found with a big check.

Curious what 1 or 2 very high level rules those actually "in the know" would apply? Probably way more helpful, fun, and less argumentative than asking what peoples Grail sets are.

@JeepologyOffroad @Rhodeman77 @RocAFella1 @RichMahogany @BGinGA @pltrgyst Y'all have an overarching rule or box you'd expect Grail sets to check off?

Does begging and pleading with @liftapint until she agrees to sell you a set of her TRK's for a couple of years qualify?

1) unique, like there would only be 1 playable set in existence
To me, that’s a bit extreme. I think they have to be limited. But if 6 or 7 guys have Binions THC WSOP sets, they’re still a grail, in my opinion.

A few boxes for me.

Availability
Doesn’t have to be one of a kind but that can certainly be a qualifier. A limited number of available sets is a must for qualification in my book. If you can get them easily ala Jacks, then they’re not grail.

Playabilty
2 racks of random denoms does not a grail set make

Feel
Leaded. Scrowns and THC. Very select few RHC sets, but likely still not grail to me.

Visual Appeal
Must have spot and color choices that work very well together. Fugly ass Paradice THCs and their ilk? Nope. T wry set will have all denoms available and accounted for. Some wiggle room for relabels

Shaped Inlays
A huge, massive bonus. Depends on the set. Differing shapes for each denom or same not round shape, such as the hub, across all denoms are another huge plus

Well, to be fair, "playable set" does mean a lot of different things to different people. It could be possible that 1 relatively large playable set can be divided into 2 or maybe 3 smaller playable sets, and yet still be considered "grail". I dislike putting numerical limits on such things, but I would not necessarily consider more than 10,000 available chips in a grail category, myself. I would tend to put the limit much smaller.

I typically use this (or similarly worded) definition:

grail: highly desired and sought after

So to me, a grail set is simply a highly desired and sought after set. Trying to placing additional parameters on it is what causes unnecessary confusion and disagreement, although simply trying to quantify 'highly desired' can also be problematic.

In other words, just because a set is not highly desired and sought after by you, that does not equate to it not being a grail set if it is highly desired and sought after by others.

Even the real Holy Grail itself (whatever it might actually be) isn't highly desired and sought after by ~everyone~.... but that doesn't prevent those who do from defining it as such. Same applies to chip sets. It's an opinion, nothing more.

^^ And that's mine. :)

tl;dr -- the poll is flawed.

I think your definition is pretty close to mine. Very hard to find, probably one of a kind that would take an extreme effort to build. Definitely not something that can bought out of the classifieds by posting a WTB add.

One more, if it’s an almost completely mill/relabel or a tribute set? Nope. Not a grail set.
I’ll go further. For me, if there’s a single milled or relabeled chip, it’s not a grail.

How are the 8V Binions considered grail by anyone? There are literally thousands in that storage locker photo that can be found or acquired (albeit for extortionate singles prices).

Seems like that would disqualify it if anyone has a limited quantity parameter.

This. I can see how some might consider it a grail set, but I don’t for these and other reasons.

Still a sick set to own if you have one

I think it’s full or history and visually appealing. I like it a lot, but personally think single color 8vs on 39mm make the side stack look odd.

It’s so subjective, I don’t call any sets “grail” anymore.

Same here. I don’t have any sets that I personally consider “grail” for now but there’s a few that I covet highly.

I know all my top sets that I could potentially own one day aren't grail. Funnily, I think I treat them more like "grail" sets than other do to sets they actually consider "grail".

I'll always have my CC CPS', because they were my first non dice chips and first purchase on here.
I will one day purchase a HOF type custom set, because I'm a big custom guy. P&P, Black Cat Club come to mind, and they would be given away but never sold out of my possession.

That's probably it. I like Mardi Gras, I like giraffes, but I can always nab em. The above two sets are not grail by any means, but someone would have to offer around 20ish X the going price to take them, or probably 6 figures+ to take a P&P or BCC or if ever am able to buy one.
