I've never seen this bug before. I've googled Michigan bugs /beetles. Couldn't find anything.

Cicada? We've got TONS of em here this year.

I think your right. We have them here as well. I've never seen one like this.

Tucker found one of the colorful, winged cicadas in the yard. He of course ate it

Yup. That is its shed outer layer. Pretty cool to watch them come out of it and dry their wings.

Indeed it is. Search for "cicada shell" and there they are.

Looks nasty, though, doesn't it?

Yep a cicada. We were supposed to get nailed this year but apparently my part of town wasn't heavily infested 17 years ago so we one or two here and there. Go 10 miles south and you needed a snowplow to clear your driveway!

And yet in the north east, our tiny bugs are a health menace. The number of tick borne infections is staggering.
