I've never seen this bug before. I've googled Michigan bugs /beetles. Couldn't find anything.

I think your right. We have them here as well. I've never seen one like this.
 
Tucker found one of the colorful, winged cicadas in the yard. He of course ate it
 
Yep a cicada. We were supposed to get nailed this year but apparently my part of town wasn't heavily infested 17 years ago so we one or two here and there. Go 10 miles south and you needed a snowplow to clear your driveway!
 
After moving to FL we came across a Banded Sphinx Moth just chilling on the brick wall outside the house (pick is stock photo, not one we took, but this thing was huge)

One of the advantages of living in the North is that for the most part, our winters keep the bugs relatively small. :)

And yet in the north east, our tiny bugs are a health menace. The number of tick borne infections is staggering.
