Tourney BTN Ante Tournament Structure Help (1 Viewer)

I also prefer no ante. However an ante tournament was suggested by several of my players as a way to shake up the nits, who fold the entire 4 hours and then bust out with a min cash and higher placed points. And I don't see anything wrong with shaking up the nits :cool
No need for antes, if that's the goal.

Just run a progressively-aggressive blinds structure that will weed out the nits by the mid-late levels, then relaxes a bit for the remaining big stacks to finish out playing for glory.

It will actually work *better* than antes for your purposes, and also highly reward early active players who fight to build a stack, vs those who attempt to nurse a shortie into the money.

This sounds great! I shall try this all remaining games in 2019 ;)

I like antes, I like table antes. But I have an idea that be simpler but would get bigger startingnpots. how about a 3 blind tournament?

Take a standard two blind structure and always put the 3rd blind in for 2x the 2nd blind.

25-25-50
25-50-100
50-75-150
50-100-200
75-150-300
100-200-400
150-300-600
(Color up T25)
200-400-800
300-600-1200
400-800-1600
600-1200-2400
800-1600-3200
(Color up T100)

Gets pretty big quick though, maybe a 400-500xBiggest blind starting stack is in order. (20-25K).

Essentially a forced-straddle tournament structure. Could be interesting.....

What happens when heads-up?

With the definition of "forced straddle", I would think the Dealer would post the "straddle", BB would be first to act on all streets.

In my experience, a straddle is posted by UTG unless explicitly defined/stated as a button straddle. And BB is never first to act, ever, under any circumstances.

@BGinGA, I'd love to see an example of this! To not stray too much off topic, could you perhaps adapt the structure in the OP according to this? To remove variables, perhaps treat it as a freezout? Whatever you think will illustrate the point best!

Pretty please?

Heads up, the dealer (SB) is also UTG. If UTG straddles then they effectively become last to act. Therefore the BB would be the first to act.

After the flop, BB is always first to act when heads up.

I'd also like to see an example of this using my structure in the OP as the base. Pretty pretty please @BGinGA?

Edit - with rebuy and add-on of course  :ROFLMAO:

If you are trying to minimize the ability of players to near-autofold and squeeze every last drop out of their stack while attempting to out-last opponents and min-cash for league points, then offering add-ons is a *really* bad idea -- so just as they become short-stacked when blinds also begin to get relatively large, you want to give them more chips? :banghead:

Add-on = more $$ in the pot!!

I’m a big proponent of BB Ante for two main reasons - (1) it’s what most major tournaments are doing, and (2) you don’t have to introduce a 3rd person putting money into the pot pre-deal. (A third reason for me is most starting stacks are 40k+ so you can also eliminate T25 chips completely)

Anyways, here is a good BB/Button ante structure for T25k. Keeping your 15k starting stacks and accounting for rebuys, this is about 6 hours not including breaks.

So throw out all the “extra” levels (100/100/100; 125/250/250, 250/500/500; 500/1000/1000; 1000/2500/2500; etc) and you get a tournament that should be complete in 5 hours including breaks.

150 300 300
200 400 400

If we’re trying to loosen up the tourneys, changing the point payout structure next year might also help. The scaling points for every place creates a bunch of ICM pressure throughout the entire tourney. You are always on a payjump bubble. Might consider assigning same point payout for 9-12 (maybe equivalent to 10th in your equation) for 13-16 (14th) for 17-20 (18th) etc. Should loosen it up in a lot of situations.
