I was thinking of playing poker again after somewhat of a hiatus. The problem is I've moved to a place where I don't know anyone really. I work 90 miles from home so work friends will very rarely drive for games. Ideas on the best way to find new players? Lol, this almost sounds like I'm asking how to make friends.

Search for Poker group on Meetup.com for your city. There is a good chance there is one.

It's tougher than it used to be to get games together. We sometimes have trouble getting more than 5-6 guys together. I think consistent game presence is key. Here, there is actually a few games advertised on craigslist and private facebook pages. Perhaps you could try one of those avenues.

I got rid of Facebook as it's a bunch of drama. I will look around though, thanks.

It's true, and even more so in today's world, politically speaking, but it may have some private groups already created that you can find a few players, maybe even some from your prior playing days.

When I first moved to Glasgow, I attended a bunch of local games and the casinos.

Got chatting to a bunch of folk, a lot of whom were not great people, many of whom were. After sounding them out, I invited a bunch of them to a private game and they've been the hardcore of our scene ever since.

Historically, I made the mistake of trying to convert my friends to poker. Figured that, as I dug it so much, they naturally would too... Wrong! Just wound up with a bunch of cancellations and flake outs.

Recruiting players from other games is the way to go, although I wouldn't do it for a game competing with one of the ones I attended.

Check out my rad sig:

There are a lot of bar tourneys in my area. Just last night, snagged a new player. She and I have played together in a few local tourneies, so I got to judge her character, and she’s very nice. After I busted out of the game, I approached her (she’s actually the bar tender in this particular bar). I asked if she’s ever played any home games, and her response was that she didn’t know of any that weren’t high pressure or blistering stakes... well....

Now, I have a really big player pool, so I am very selective of who gets invited. Douchebaggery will not be tolerated. But... when first starting out, it’ll be hard to be super picky.

The other Avenue is I’d look at various neighborhood groups. Our neighborhood has a Facebook group, and for a while, my wife got annoyed because everytime we met a new neighbor, I somehow worked in a plug for playing cards. On a number of occasions, I’d start to launch into a speel about neighborhood activities (cough, you know, like poker). And the neighbor would beat me to the punch, and say they’d been looking for a card game to play in. :)

Always recruiting....

Doesn’t hurt that I have a hotdog roller grill tho...

basically it seems like if you just buy a griller everything falls into place from there... A solid griller is the focal point for any good home game... This is what I have learned from PCF so far.

I need to really start talking to people in our neighborhood and see if they play. That’s a great idea that I’ve thought about but never really put it into action....Although I have had the opportunity.

It seems like most of the guys that I play in already established games met each other through the free poker bar leagues. I have tried playing these games and after you pay for food and drinks etc, it’s nothing but free. And I’m not the greatest salesman when trying to concentrate on the game itself. I can see where it would be a great place to find local people for your home game though.

Depending on how many players you are looking to recruit, playing in bar games can be a good way to meet people and vet potential invitees at a neutral venue.

Poker leagues, meetups, and the occasional "hey, you into poker?" are all pretty effective methods.

Join a local fraternal order. Elks, Eagles, & Moose usually have card games. Lions not so much, but you still may find some players.

How far do you live from a casino? That's where I've recruited most of the players in my home game from. I play regularly at the casino, and when I meet somebody who I think would mesh well in the home game, I invite them.
