So this week is 5 years since Neil Peart passed. Such a loss. So who do you think is the current (i.e., living) king of the kit? I think Stuart Copeland (The Police) is today’s best player.

So what other candidates are out there who merit a deeper listen? Please share a good clip with the group!

Todd Sucherman from Styx is awesome and old school…his double bass is very on point.

Scroll to 3:53 in the above video to see the good ending parts…

Too subjective for me to say who the best is but I will say Neil is still my favorite of all time....and it's not even close.

RIP the Professor.

Gavin Harrison. Drummer of Porcupine Tree, King Crimson, and The Pineapple Thief.
Remarkable chops, and the consistently best sounding kit I've ever heard.

Then there's the legendary Terry Bozzio. I saw him at the Modern Drummer drumfest quite a few years ago and he left an auditorium of drummers...amateur and professionals alike...simply speechless.

3rd and obligatory demonstration why:

And it’s this level or higher on just about every TOOL song!

I can’t think of another drummer that is so integral to the band’s “sound” and almost instantly recognizable than Danny Carey!

Even if you are not a DMB fan.. watching / hearing Carter on any given night is SPECIAL

DMB played my company Holiday party right before Under the Table And Dreaming sky rocketed - lol. (It rocked)

We used to see them at the Flood Zone in RVA all the time back in the day. They’d just grab beers at the bar after the sets. It was cool.

Some bands you just knew were going to take off.

Those were the days! We used to get some decent music in RVA back then.

There are some beasts out there!
Vinnie Colaiuta is by far my favorite drummer since.
Steve Gadd the legend!
Gergo Borlai the inhuman!
Thomas Lang the machine.
Glen Hoglan the master.
And so on…. ; )

Not the flashiest player, but DJ Johnson from Khruangbin keeps time better than an atomic clock and always has solid, tasty grooves.

this is tangentially related, and i recorded the video so i am posting it. this song doesn't feature any particularly special drumming, but the lyrics are about someone else's favorite drummer - brad wilk, from rage against the machine, audioslave, etc.

this concert was totally impromptu in the lead singer's living room, because their actual scheduled show was canceled due to a snowstorm in upstate NY. please enjoy one of my favorite concert memories of all time:

All good, all good… but massive props need to go out to Rick Allen.
