Hey y’all, I was wondered what you guys think about deviating from the standard chip colors. Ex: $5 being red
Regardless of your subjective artistic value towards the chip itself, does the base color have to be standard? Would it mess up your home game if you got a new set with different denom colors — like the $5 is purple now lol

I have two sets that do not have denominations. If I had not used the standard colors I would have been strung up by my guys. I have another semi custom set that is non standard, but they have denominations printed clearly on them.

Have you not read the new member start here thread? (Link in signature)

There are two standards, Nevada and Cali - I dislike red, and I love the Cali standard. I do like orange, and I have seen a purple 5, you'll want to make sure the set has denoms on it.

As long as they are denominated I think it’s fine, but I have to say I have never owned a set with non-standard colors. I really like the Vegas color model. Blue $1s are fine with me!

I changed up a set “just because” and haven’t had a problem when playing with them…

Yeah! It’s really insightful; i’m giving it another read. I’m asking for opinions here that deviate from the standard

Absolutely not. This is the best part about making customs or relabeling. You can make purple $5's, yellow $1's, orange quarters, you get the idea.

My signature when I'm designing tournament sets is always a non black T100 chip.

No, I’m married to my wife
Jokes aside. I’m not married to any traditional color schemes. I think it’s always good to have enough contrast between base colors that they’re easy to differentiate and after that it’s all up to you. My crowd is new enough at poker, young enough to adapt, and follows directions well so I’m never worried about changing up colors on them.

That being said, I strongly prefer denominated chips always and that assuages a lot of the issues you might have with non traditional colors.

If the chips are denominated, usually it's not an issue to mix up the colors a bit. I personally like when 1 or maybe 2 chips in the lineup are nontraditional colors - mix in a green fiver or a red quarter. Two of my custom sets follow that thought:

I personally find sets where all the chips are wildly different colors a little distracting. And what I would strongly caution against is using all/most traditional colors, but just out of proper order. I played in a game once with the following chips colors/denoms:

25c: white
$1: red
$5: green
And was like....

Sure, pick whatever colors you like. In chipping, there are no rules, just laws.

I don’t have a strong preference and have played with sets with varying color schemes. With that said, if I could pick without impacting anyone else negatively (for example, someone who just loves his cali set), I would go with Vegas colors.

Absolutely sticking to traditional colours. Otherwise I would feel completely unsettled and constantly checking if I just played proper denom. I can agree with white or blue $1 but they are still within agreed boundaries.

They're your chips... for your game. If non-standard base colors are what you want then, by all means, go for it..

The primary rule I try to live by when building a set is to ensure that all chips that share the table are easily identifiable and do not confuse the players in any way. Avoid colors that are close, and perhaps even avoid chips with spots that match another chip's base color.

These are one of my cash game sets from a session a few months ago.

In for $40. Out for $130'ish

Charcoal $1's and blue $5's: I'd say that's fairly uncommon. There's a lot of variance in fracs, so nothing really weird there.

I think it somewhat depends on how often the players in the game play in casinos (and which set of casinos) vs just home games.

I’ve lived my whole life near AC and have played literally thousands of hours in AC casinos with white/red/green/black. Most other casinos I’ve played in used the same, with the possible blue one vs white.

Can I play with any random colors? Sure. And I’ll still have a blast. I’ll use lacquered Girl Scout cookies if that’s what you’ve settled on. Your set should be what you want. But for me, personally? Standard Nevada colors just feel more natural to me so they’re what I personally would pick and not deviate from!

Cash sets im fairly flexible with... especially fracs and $1's. Tournament sets I am personally pretty stuck on Vegas colors or at least shades of those colors. My players probably don't care what i do as Casinos just became legal in my state so they don't have much of a basis. Obviously you can tell everyone has differing opinions.

Only one of my custom sets has "standard" chip colors, and that set has a Vegas color half and a California color half, so essentially two sets.

The rest vary from mostly standard with a couple variants to far from any rhyme or reason. The common across all is they have clear denominations on them. My group have never complained, and a couple of those have been guest sets at other games that weren't complained about either.

Custom chips are custom. Do what makes you happy, but do realize that if things are too far out in left field, folks outside your regular group might struggle a bit with colors they aren't too used to.

You have a few options but realistically not all the options.

Purple $5 seems good because it’s near red and you don’t have to worry about people confusing with $500. Orange $5 is great. Maroon $5 yay, that’s what I did. Pink $5 cool. Yellow $5 Cali awesome.

White $5 or green $5 I would seriously reconsider.

Yes, I like blue. I don’t think it should be $10, but make it a fraction to keep its spirit alive.
