Interesting...I would be interested in watching some time lapse footage. I know they are cold blooded but would be interested to see if they expel 'warm' air and 'poke' their noses through the ice sheet it's slightly frozen.

I've seen where cattle can breath on ice that is up to an inch thick to thaw it so they can drink
 
It is crazy that an animal that big can survive in ice like that. I am curious how long they could survive frozen.
 
I would imagine a long time since they are cold blooded, as the temp drops so does their body functions and demands. Keep in mind their bodies are not actually frozen, the water below is still unfrozen.
