I plan to host ~3 hour cash games for max. 6 players, who lean towards small stakes and are unlikely to exceed $500pp a night.

Can I get away with 300 chips?

SB/BB

$1/$2

Denominations

$1
$5
$25
$100

Breakdown (% Total Value)

75 x $1 = $75 (1.4%)
100 x $5 = $500 (9.0%)
100 x $25 = $2500 (44.8%)
25 x $100 = $2500 (44.8%)

Total Value $5,575

Does the above look right? What would the starting hand be?

This forum has been a great resource, and I've read through The Beginners Guide To Mapping Out A Cash Game Chip Set, but I'm still confused. Thanks for your help!

I have a link in my signature that will walk you through how to build out your chip needs/breakdown.

First, I would say you should spread a 1/1 game instead of a 1/2. We can run the numbers for both.

1/2 game:
A buy-in of 200 bigs would put the buy-in at 400, and we'll say two buy-ins. 800 x 6 means a bank needs 4800.
You shouldn't do a 1/2 game; the numbers don't work out, and you'll have players overextending their bankrolls or comfort levels to play. They may also be playing short if they change the buy-in, meaning they don't feel like they have enough, and if they don't afford more, then they might decide not to play, and if they do they may feel bad for playing if they lose.

1/1 game:
A buy-in of 200 bigs would put the buy-in at 200, and we'll say two buy-ins. 400 x 6 means a bank needs 2400. So we are in the right ballpark, let's up this to cover your average night.
$200 x 2.5 buy-ins $500 x 6 is a bank of $3000.

In either game, your workhorse chip will be the $5.
I'll assume it's a self-dealt game with no rake, this assumption will mean you can get away with only a rack of $1s. Lets also assume players don't want to go all in often and they prefer some play, which means smaller denominations.

1 x 100
5 x 100
25 x 100
Total bank: 3100

This will cover your average banking needs. However, it won't allow you to play the game very well, with 15ish chip per smaller denom.

or

1 x 100
5 x 160
25 x 40
let $100 bills play
Total bank: 1900

To answer your question directly, No, 300 chips won't cover your game.

If I were to try to run as lean as possible here is what I would try to start with using 400 chips

1 x 120
5 x 220
25 x 40
100 x 20

Total Bank: 4320

I agree with @Machine $5 chips are your work horses. I host a 1/2 game and am consistently running 4+ racks of $5 chips on the tables, while only a few barrels of $25s usually find their way into play. And $100s have only come out for vanity and in extremely small numbers. Maybe 8 total ever played. If I were to do a min set, I’d do 80 $1s, 20 $25s and 300 $5s. 5-10 singles per player is plenty. They’ll swap and make change for each other. Players seem to prefer the “feel” of bigger stacks of $5s. When I first started hosting, I only had 2 racks of red and it was a PITA.
