Hey all! I'm putting together a 300 chip set for an occasional small game with 8 or fewer people, and I want to double check the chip breakdown before I order anything.

I've been reading through a bunch of the breakdown threads and playing around with the calculator. I think I want to go with a T100 base since that seems a little more chip efficient, and using the 20K 10-8-10-1 (T100-T500-T1000-T5000) breakdown from BGinGA. For 8 people with 4 rebuys that gives me:

80 x T100
64 x T500
80 x T1000
24 x T5000

248 Total Chips

To color up chips should I just use T5000 or should I use T1000 as well? Either way still puts me pretty well under 300 chips but I'm not sure if one is better than the other (or if it really matters). Any suggestions on what to round out the set with that might give a little more flexibility or options? Thanks!

That depends on if you want more T1000 on the table. Some prefer more chips, some prefer fewer. A middle ground could be to add 8 T1000 for the first color-up and 7 T5000 for the second.

Any suggestions on what to round out the set with
Yes:
  • Spares! Always get spares.
  • Bounty chips. Bounties are fun!
  • Seating chips. Totally unnecessary for 8 players, so of course you should get them anyway!
  • You could combine bounties and seating, with the seat number on one side and "Bounty" on the other.
  • Show-em chips.
  • Rabbit hunt chips.
  • 300 more chips because who knows, you might host a 2 table tournament some day ;)

I come up with either 257 or 263 chips for 8 x T20K stacks (10-8-10-1), depending on whether or not T1000s are used to color-up the T100 chips:

80 x T100
64 x T500
80 x T1000
33 x T5000 (includes 9x for T100/T500 color-ups and 16x for four re-buys)
------------
257 chips

80 x T100
64 x T500
88 x T1000 (includes 8x for T100 color-ups)
31 x T5000 (includes 7x for T500 color-ups and 16x for four re-buys)
------------
263 chips

Personally, I prefer more than 80x T1000 chips in play, so would be inclined to use the second breakdown, modified to fill out with additional T1000s (which can be used for re-buys):

80 x T100
64 x T500
128 x T1000 (includes 8x for T100 color-ups and 40x towards four re-buys)
23 x T5000 (includes 7x for T500 color-ups and 8x towards four re-buys)
------------
295 chips. 20K re-buy stacks are 10x T1000 and 2x T5000, getting more T1000s in play.

Add an extra spare chip (or two) to each denomination for 300 chips total.

Yeah it works either way. Use T1000 for the T100s to make both color ups 10:1 or T5000 for both color ups making the first one 50:1 and the second one 10:1.

For T20k starting stack I lean toward the latter I think the 5ks will be more useful at the end of the tourney.

So 8 * 10/8/10/1 is 80/64/80/8 like you said before + 8 extra T5ks for color up.

But I might consider cutting back the 500s a fair bit and you may want to set this tournament up to have more T5000s in the endgame. So consider...

10/4/7/2
*8
80/32/120/8 = 240.

100/40/140/20 = 300 gives you 10 stacks or 8 with spares.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions! I think I'm going to go with BGinGA's final breakdown since that will accommodate 10/8/10/1 as well as 10/4/7/2 tweaking the color up and rebuy a little.

Bounties sound like fun so I'm betting I can find some space in the chip case even if it pushes the total a little over 300 ;). Thanks again!

Regarding:
You could combine bounties and seating, with the seat number on one side and "Bounty" on the other.
I forgot about rebuys. You need "pure" bounty chips for rebuys.

There's also a thing called rebuy-chips, which again is totally unneccessary for 8 players (and only applicable it the rebuys are limited per player). Thought I'd mention it.

And FWIW, my opinion is that 10/8/10/1 is too heavy on T500. 10/4/12/1 is probably sufficient, but I would probably go with 10/6/11/1 as a middle ground. That would also free up some chips.
