I have seen a number of folks here doing 3D printing so I was hoping to pick your brains about something. I use the Spinetti 1000 chip racks in an antique map file cabinet to store the chips I buy from all over the place. Each rack is 16 5/8" wide and has 50 slots that each fit a barrel.

I like to use each slot for every different casino but with 100 slots per drawer and 12 drawers, I am already out of slots. For the majority of the casinos, I only have a few chips. So I was wondering if it would be possible to 3D print dividers that would lay across each row of slots dividing them in half and clip on either side of the rack. Pardon my crude drawing, but it would look something like this about 1/8" thick and would have ten half round sections not six.

So my question is... do you think that is doable and what would it cost? I would need about 120 of them. I appreciate any input you may have. Thanks.
 
I'd be very interested. The materials would likely just be 50c - $1 per divider, but the real costs would be design+test+revise time and printer time.

16.x" is quite large though. That's very close to the *diagonal* on my biggest printer so I'm not sure it'd quite fit, depending on the design and the print orientation. Any hope for doing this with smaller dividers and using them more modularly?

Yeah I would think you should be able to make them into 2 pieces to better accommodate the print area size. Maybe have them connect somehow too?
 
As Cole suggested, I would think you could do it in two pieces that connect in the middle. The key would be designing it in such a way that the dividers hold security in place.
 
I'm interested. I am " one of those folks doing 3D printing". I would need to get my hands on a Spinetti 1000 chip rack. A 2pc print will likely be necessary. Getting a rack will cost me $32 unless I can find one cheaper. I'd have to charge you like 2$ a space and hope you need at least 20 to=$40 but I'd make as many as you would want, if I could get a rack for cheaper I'd charge you way less. I don't think the design will be difficult at all and the filament will cost less than $.50 per spacer.
 
Thanks. The Lemur Returns is already working on this project for me. I ordered a Spinetti tray for him. But I will let you know if we are not able to get this done. Thanks for your interest.

If anyone else has a need for these dividers, please comment in here and we will let you know if/when they are available.

If anyone cares, we made this work as a single piece using the diagonal on my biggest printer. Could only print one at a time, but 2.5w later, we have 120x printed!

Im pretty jealous of that 340 print bed. I have not bought into the bamboo ecosystem yet but... Oh wait this is the PCF not my 3D printer forum if only there was a someone or some way to combine the two ;)
 
Definitely doable, 3d printers have come a long way. I would be asking for the printer someone was going to use for you, its accuracy and capabilities, material selection, infill, and choices they will make in the slicer. A good designer and good printer will handle this no problem with the right choices, and shouldn't need too many revisions because they should already have a handle on the shrinkage. Good luck!
