Planning on a .25/.50 200BB buy-in cash game 8-max. Using the standard 600 chip breakdown of 100/200/200/100 as a starting point, I have room to get more chips (800, even 1000), and primarily want to optimize for efficiency (enough chips to not have to make change constantly but not too many to slow down counting). I'm thinking that because 200BB is deeper stacked than your typical 50-100BB buy-in game, $5 will be even more of a workhorse so it might be good to get more of those? There's also endless debates as to how many SB chips to have, whether 1 rack is enough or more is better, so maybe a few more barrels of 25c to hedge? Curious about people's thoughts.

Here’s my smaller stakes set (includes NCV for microstakes):

For 0.25/0.5 $100 buy in, everyone gets a barrel of 25c, a barrel of $1s for $25. Then the rest in 5s up to either $50 or max $100 buy in.

For rebuys/ add ons, I only issue $5s since most of the fracs/$1s are on the table. You can get by with 1 rack of fracs.

@RocAFella1 recommended gives you a bank of ~$6.2k. General guidance is you want your bank to cover 5000x big blind. So that breakdown can cover you up to a $1 big blind game in theory.

I’ve yet to dip into my $25s with this setup on $100 max buy in/match half the stack. Usually get into the 3rd or 4th rack of $5s and that’s it. It’s also dependent on your players, if they are casino /action aggro types and lots of rebuys, you’ll use the 3rd/4th rack of 5s. If it’s more passive, 2 racks of 5s is enough.

The fracs can congregate over to the villain if he stacks a few folk, hence some preference to limit fracs to 1 rack with less small chips moving about:

Go with Roc’s guidance and you’re covered. Or drop the $100s and switch to an extra barrel of fracs if you’re never going higher than $0.25/0.5.

GL!

I play .25/.50 100-200 bb, 8-handed

One rack of quarters is plenty. I could see wanting a few more if you played 9 or 10 handed. But there’s no need for a full second rack.

I also see no need for more than twenty $1s per player - everybody starts with 20 and there’s no need to hand out more with rebuys.

100/200/300/100

This is my breakdown. I've used this breakdown for 15 years for our $100 max dealers choice games. It works. If you add another 40 to the quarters and 100 to the ones and fives you'll be able to spread it to 14 players.

This also works and fits snuggly in Matsui racks into a Nanuk 915 case for travel.

This question comes up A LOT and there are many many threads on the topic. Here’s my take:

Cash...two rules of thumb:

1. 100 x 25¢ is plenty for a single table (give a barrel out to each of the first 5 players ala @abby99 , and the others can make change as the game progresses), and
2. Always get spares (at least 5-10) of every denom in case of Murphy.

This guy keeps getting it right, and I hear he’s a hell of a fella:

Or ignore him and go with this guy’s advice...he’s smaht and good-looking to boot:

I prefer handing out barrels and owning complete racks.
$100 Buy In Everyone Gets:
20 @ .25
20 @ 1.00
15 @ 5.00
So I buy 2 racks of fracs & 2 racks of ones plus 3 racks of $5's and a rack of $25's. This $4,250 bank was enough (but it was close!) to cover a .25/.50 game at PHL4.
