Tourney 20 people places how many winners? (1 Viewer)

Ive heard a few different things in regards to how many people will get paid out. Im going to do a smaller 2 table tournament but looking to see what the norm is for payouts. For 20 people is it 5 payouts? 6? Or am i way off? Looking for some insite. Thank you

Rule of thumb: Full table is 3 spots. Add a spot for every additional table.

Ooo i like that. Yea we place top 3 for a single table so i was curious how many more get added for an additional one. I should of done top 6 for my 4 table tourney i hosted then. Ill remember that for next time. Thank you

We are pretty liberal and pay about about 25% regardless of the size of the field. We want to give more players a chance to cash so the less skilled players will keep coming back.

WSOP does 15% now. IMO, home game tourneys should pay more places.

I've always heard and paid 30% of the field, with standard rounding based on 50% or more. For a table of 10, three places: 50, 30, and 20%.

This is what I have for my league;
(2) PAYOUT STRUCTURE
(2.1) 5 players - 1 place - Winner takes all. ($225)
(2.2) 6 - 9 players - 2 Places - 1st 60%, 2nd 40%
(2.3) 10 - 15 players - 3 Places - 1st 50%, 2nd 30%, 3rd 20% ($225, $135, $90, based on 10 players)
(2.4) 16 - 20 players - 4 Places - 1st - 40%, 2nd - 30%, 3rd - 20%, 4th 10%

I always like to payout more for homegames so more people feel like they win. For 20, I typically did 5, or 25% of the field with a 35/30/20/10/5 type split.

For two full tables we pay 4 places.
It was 50%/25%/15%/10% for quite a time, so every price jump is higher than the previous one.
After we changed it to 40%/25%/20%/15%, we have less deals than before?!

I'm in favor of paying 3 at a full table. For multi-table tournaments, pay 25 percent of total entries/rebuys/addons, but capping it at less than half the field.

I went by the above when I hosted my two table tournament. However, having seen the generous pay-out schedules of other home games has made me reconsider how many places I would pay out if I was to regularly host another MTT. Instead of three at 9, four at 18, 5 at 27 etc. I would pay-out top four at 16, top 5 at 24, and top 6 at 32, etc.

I have found a pay-out structure of top four for 14 to 17 players and top 5 for 17 to 20 players, etc. is popular in the MTT home games that I have played in.

I prefer MTT's that pay-out the top 12.5 to 15 percent of the field at casinos and top 20 percent at home games, but the former usually pay-out fewer spots while the latter tends to pay out a larger percentage of the field.

Some people would argue that a shallower payout structure is better for a home tournament anyway...

We pay out 5 places for a 20 player tourney. More opportunities for payout keeps guys coming back. And it’s low stakes. We are there for the camaraderie and competition. The money is just a way to keep score.

That being said, I believe a lot of home games pay 4 spots for a 20 player field.

There’s no wrong way to do it, as long as it’s published, clearly, beforehand. Personally, I’m used to tournaments where a mincash is crap, like 10% more than the buyin. And I like it that way, because it saves a lot more money for the people who deserve it (IMO,) the very top finishers.
And personally, I hate rebuys. So yeah, I’m very cool with somebody who rebuys breaking even (or even losing money) with a mincash - eff them, they busted. They can pay to keep playing, but that money should go to the people who actually played well.

But to answer the original question - I’d pay 4 in a 20 man. I’m great with the “pay 3 to the first table, +1 for each additional table) because as the field increases, that will keep the places paid to the 10-15% range, which is where I like it.

for my 8 player game with rebuys we do one buy in withheld for the league ending final tournament, 2 buy ins to the runner up, and the rest to the winner who is usually getting 6 to 8 buy ins. After every 10 tournaments we have the big final table with the 10 collected buy ins plus everyone paying 2x the normal buy in with no rebuys so 26 total buy ins up for grabs. Winner takes 15, runner up 7, 3rd place 4.

payouts obviously should be discussed prior to the start. I also feel negotiations among the 1st and 2nd placed players to split the prize pot at a different percentage to be just fine as well once heads up play happens in a tournament.

The ones in Bold are my preferred game with 1-2 tables 1 buy in is set aside for 3rd place then the rest of the pot is split 70/30 between 1st and 2nd, sometimes players also suggest using 3rd place prize money for "take out food etc...." instead of a prize spot for 3rd)

I don't believe in paying past 4th for anything less than 3 tables, even then the payout shouldn't really go past 6th if its a home game with a buy in under $100....I feel it makes the overall prize pot too small for the winner.
