BT speaker question (1 Viewer)

Again, a question for those smarter than me.

I get in my car, the phone connects auto-magically. I turn on my headset, my phone connects auto-magically.

Why does my Oontz Angle require me to manually connect? Is there a setting I can change (on the speaker or the phone) that will make it auto-connect?

Probably not. Is the speaker always on? Or do you turn it on when wanting to listen to music? It should connect at power up assuming no other devices are in range, and your phone is not paired to another device.

I assume that by "auto-magically" you are talking about Bluetooth connection.
The auto-magically connection happens when your Bluetooth output device (headphones, boombox, etc) is configured as 'Automatic' in the options (iPhone and android terms may differ)
You can also assign one device as 'default' device for music and another to answer the phone, etc. In this case you avoid a incoming call to be broadcast via the Oontz Angle.
Configuration is made via the phone and from the Bluetooth options.

My Oontz Angle 3 Ultra remembers any pairings and connects without problem. It is a little slower to connect than other BT devices I have but doesn't fail/not remember a pairing. Sometime if there are other BT devices within range (and on) my phone will connect to them faster and not connect to the Oontz. Also the Oontz with power off after a period of inactivity so you have to sometimes power it back on. There are no settings other than power, pause/play, track +- & volume on the speaker itself.

Could it be your phone. I have a galaxy 9 and it will auto pair with the last 4 or 5 devices I used. But if it's been awhile its quicker to just search and manually pair

Speaker is only paired to my phone. My phone is paired (and connected) to my vehicle until I get to the office. When I shut off my car, the connection breaks. With 10 minutes, I turn on the BT speaker -- the phone is not connected to anything else -- and I have to manually connect it to the speaker...

I typically connect with 3 devices regularly my car (daily), my BT speaker (3-4 times a week) and a wireless headphones (once a week). I occasionally pair with my wife's vehicle (once every 1-2 weeks) or one of my other BT headphones (once every 2-4 weeks).

Regardless, I never auto-connect to the Oontz. Seems like it should, but it doesn't.

Nothing else is connected. I have a Fitbit that syncs via BT, but I have it set to manual sync... And notifications on the watch are turned off... And it doesn't interfere with connections on any other device...

All I have left is what I could find on Google -

Remove the OontZ Angle 3 from the Bluetooth device list on your audio source device, restart your audio source device, and then re-pair and connect to the speaker. Turn your OontZ Angle 3 off and back on. Some devices need to have their WIFI turned off to improve audio quality over Bluetooth.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The OontZ Angle will automatically try to pair to the last connected device each time the OontZ Angle is turned on and that device is or comes within range. If the OontZ Angle successfully connects to the last device it will prevent any other device from pairing to it, until that device is disconnected. If you have multiple Bluetooth devices and you are not able to pair to a Bluetooth device, please check the other devices to see if the OontZ Angle has already connected to it. If the OontZ Angle is connected, please disconnect that device so the next device can be paired and connected.

I guess I can't definitively rule that out, but I doubt it. Also, it was the same issue at my last office and with my last phone.

Maybe a new speaker is in order? If it's that important- my daughter has a Flip 4 and it's loud enough to annoy me as she listens to her gansta rap while taking 45 minute showers. I used it at the Alamo meetup and am pretty sure it auto connected with no issues on my andriod.

If you turn Bluetooth off on your phone then back on to trigger scanning, does it connect?

And is there a setting to make your phone discoverable to other devices?

Have you tried a hard reset of the speaker:

That should clear any errant BT connections it may have and start over with your phone and see if it works then.....

The blue light with flashing red indicates the device is disconnected and the OontZ Angle is in pairing mode.

You can then pair and connect to the next device.

It could be possible that another device is connected to your Adroid when you power on your Oontz Angle ?

So I had to turn the speaker off to charge the battery.. here's the typical sequence every day...

1. Nothing connected to my phone by BT, power off on speaker.

2. Turn power on speaker. Nothing happens.

3. When I tap on '2. Oontz Angle,' it starts the connection process.

...and connects.

Let's try.

We're connected from above. Kill power to the speaker.

Wait and confirm speaker is no longer BT connected.

Power speaker back on.

Back to #2 above.

I have the original Oontz... Nothing in the manual about a hard reset. It does confirm that when powered on, it should try to connect to the last device... I just tried that and it's not working... Sounds like I got a bum Oontz.

Definitely abnormal behavior. When I turn my speaker on it pairs to my phone (iPhone X). Occasionally all BT devices need to be cleared and re-paired but it shouldn't not connect/pair at all. I just tested mine at lunch, turned speaker on and it auto connected to my phone. Sounds like a defective speaker.

Tried that... It wouldn't disconnect while playing audio. I stopped the audio and held to pair and it didn't do anything. So I forgot the device and repaired. It re-paired fine. And when I was connected, I killed the power on speaker. On repowering the speaker, no auto-connect.

I manually connected, played audio, then manually disconnected. Then powered off the speaker and on re-powering it, no auto-connect. But it manually connected fine.

Shame, but the Oontz is a great speaker, I love mine. If its still returnable I would try, otherwise just manually connect.

The stereo in my Jeep does this too. At first I cheaped out and bought a Sony stereo without Bluetooth and ended up plugging in a little BT receiver box. It was pretty easy to use, just push a button on the box and it would turn on and automatically connect to my phone. But after a few years I upgraded to a new Sony stereo with BT built in, and it does the same thing as your Oontz. I have to manually connect with my phone every single time (sometimes multiple tries). It's an even bigger pain in the ass than my old setup. I might just go back to using a cord to the headphone jack.

My conclusion: Bluetooth sucks as hard as USB when it comes to reliability of connecting devices.
