Whisky under $100 (1 Viewer)

This one actually

Aberlour A'Bunadh. Cost a bit more than $100 here.

It's a good drop. I like how you can add differing amounts of water to the A'bundh to open it up to get different taste sensations. It's too full on neat but has a lot of depth and subtlety with a smidge of water. :)

Haven't tried much single malt. I'm not a big drinker but have developed a taste for whiskey moonshine we make here. When I go home, I want to buy two bottles to add to the bar. Here is what I need.

A very "peaty" beginners Single Malt Scotch that you would recommend for a new drinker you were trying to bring into the herd. Pick two. I want to pour two and make some decisions.

I would throw 3 options out there Mike, priced resonably at around $40-$60...

Caol Ila 12yo - peaty but milder than its counterparts. I think it's a good introduction to peat.

Talisker 10yo - it adds some 'rocky' minerality to the peat which makes it really balanced

Laphroaig 10yo - peat, peat, peat and I like it!!!

I find "very peaty" and "beginner's" to be an interesting combination. If you really want "very peaty" go with Laphroaig 10. I always say it tastes like burning tires in the best way possible. Man, now I want a sip...

what do you mean by "peaty"?

Peaty means in runs hard into home plate during all star games. Really not too sure how it tastes but I think only scotch has this characteristic since the peat bogs are all around up there

that was a ton helpful, thanks, lol.

what do you mean by "peaty"?

Some distilleries in Scotland (mostly in the isle of Isley) use burning peat to dry the damp barley... The smoke from the peat permeates the barley for a few hours and imparts a 'smoky' taste to the final malt... So when people refer to peaty malts they are referring to malts which have smoke quality to their taste/smell...

I'll bring some Laphroaig to Jason's game Friday so you can taste the 'smoke'! :)

Reactions from first time Laphroaig drinker are usually 'OMG, this shit is awesome' or 'OMG, how can a scotch taste this bad! I'm never, ever, gonna drink peaty whisky again!' ;)

sounds great to me!!!

My sister and brother in law live in Scotland. There is a small distillery right in their town, I forget which one. He gave me some Laphroig to drink among others while we were there last summer. That was the one that really stood out to me. Can't say I really liked it, but it sure was different.
