Can someone help me explain the math behind starting stacks. I see a lot of threads with people asking "how many chips/starting stack for x amount of players.

I don't want to necessarily muddy of the forum with another one of those posts, so I would like some help coming up with the answer myself since the amount of players I will have will vary.

FYI, i am planning on having anywhere from 6-9 players at a time, would like the option for buy in's, and just ordered my first set up chips on this forum that includes:
114 T25, 113 T100, 71 T500, and 82 T1000 .

Also, if this has already been explained, a link would really help me out.

Most commonly recommended T25-base starting stack configuration for T10000 stacks is 12/12/5/6, followed by 8/8/4/7. Multiply those by the number of players to determine your required set size, adding extra T1000 chips for color-ups and T5000 chips for re-buys and/or larger starting stacks.

A typical 10-player set will require:
120 x T25
120 x T100
50 x T500
75 x T1000 (15x for T25/T100 color-ups)
10 x T5000 (T500 color-ups, up to 5x re-buys, or for T15K stacks)

Welcome to PCF!

Your set will work fine for 10 players, but you should try to find some T5000s for rebuys, or possible deepstack games.

What chips did you buy?

There are a bunch of threads discussing tourney breakdowns. You'll come across plenty of them in the forum.

Also, PCF has a chip calculator tool. Click the "Links" dropdown in the top bar.

I assume you just have this post on auto paste or something. :D

There are a number of factors that make up the math of starting stacks.
  • Length of the tournament (number of hours to play)
  • Blind level progression (how quickly the blinds increase)
  • Number of players, including rebuys.
  • Chips available
There has been discussion into how deep you need to go (how many Big Blinds in a starting stack). That varies by how you want the game to play, but typically 100-200 is the consensus.

I can go into more detail on each factor if you wish, but that could be a lengthy essay.

Found some Majestic China Clay's on here for about .32/chip. Just received them today so just trying to get everything ready for my first home game with come structure to it.

Sounds like I should add some T5000 chips to my set.

For sure. You can order a sleeve of 25 for $10 plus shipping from @Apache, or post a want ad. I’m sure someone has some to spare.

Looks like I’ll have 10 T5000’s thanks to @Beakertwang. What does everybody think would be my best use. Use 5 or so for re buy’s and another 5 or so to color up and make change?

Most of your color ups will be done with your T1000, and maybe your T500, depending on what you prefer. Use your T5000's for rebuys, and to get the 500's of the table late, if needed.
