Tap the deck instead of cutting? (1 Viewer)

So we usually shuffle ahead/cut behind and as the night goes on, I usually get lazy and just tap when offered the deck to cut. I never thought this was an issue and no one has ever said anything to me but I've read recently that this really pisses some people off. So what's the verdict?

I play in a home game where they don’t ever cut even when offered and it’s really upsetting. I can’t explain why but if you don’t cut the cards it’s an abject disaster.

Edit: I re-read the OP more carefully, and now I'm not sure. Do you already use 2 decks? Either way, cut the deck.

I think it qualifies as dopey poker schtick. It takes a half second longer to cut than tap.

Interesting 40% feel it’s ok but so many reacted in horror at the concept of the dealer cutting themselves when discussing that topic.

Disagree with this. Person with the option to cut gets to "decide" which card is the top card (by cutting or tapping) Dealer deals the cards that they're given, they don't get to change the deck.

Absolutely everyone at the table has the right to cut the deck. And for good reason in a self-dealt game, given the typical player is sloppy at shuffling. I do not greatly fear mechanics or other sophisticated cheats. I do have solid concerns about half the table knowing what the bottom card is. It is even worse if the top card is know - something that also happens from time to time.

Why invite trouble or harsh questions? Just cut the deck. -=- DrStrange

This is a whole other thread! Maybe it’s not something I’m used to but the last time we played together, I lost count of the number of times I shuffled the cut card into the deck.

Yeah, I know, but it only takes a little practice to keep the goddamn cut card separately on the table, waiting for the deck.

Cutting the deck is offered as a method of thwarting the shuffler's attempt to stack the deck. If the shuffler is Penn Jillette and he keys on the fact I always cut a certain way, my cut isn't going to stop the cheat.

So I'll cut it thin, I'll cut it thick, I'll even tap the deck if I'm so inclined so as not to be predictable.

If I tap the deck and you come along behind me a cut it, you're getting booted Vikram.

keeps hitting the board when Penn deals, and Teller always makes a set.

Tapping is not acceptable practice. The dealer shuffles, cuts, and deals. Those three things must still happen, even if it's a pass-the-deal game, or you choose to distribute the tasks across more than one person. Skipping a step is not protocol.

We had an impromptu cash game on Saturday on Saturday night and a few times when I offered host the deck to cut, he tapped. I mentioned this thread. The next time, he cut exactly two cards off the top

Robert's Rules of Poker define a cut as "To divide the deck into two sections in such a manner as to change the order of the cards." Tapping the deck does not do that.

I've also read somewhere that a cut must not involve more than X and fewer than Y cards, or a percentage of the deck. I cannot find that rule right now, but RRoP is pretty clear that tapping the deck is not an option any more than tapping the deck instead of shuffling is an option (but a great time saver).
