Josh McDaniels, in his efforts to cling on to the sinking shiny Titanic that is the New England Patriots right now, decided to screw over the Colts and blow up his future career prospects at the same time.

This is a pretty impressive character implosion unfolding before our eyes...

Yet the hole Josh McDaniels has dug for himself might be the deepest.

The morning after the Patriots’ offensive coordinator’s stunning last-second spurning, in which he reneged on an agreed-upon deal to become the Colts’ head coach and chose to remain in New England, shock waves were still traveling around the football world about how a coach could torch his bridges not just in Indy but throughout the league and desert his to-be assistants. McDaniels knew, though, that going all-in on the Patriots and all-out on everyone else could be the death of his football ambitions.

McDaniels’ agent, Bob Lamonte, told McDaniels this could be the biggest professional mistake of his life...

I agree, but it sounds like he has his future job locked in ... when BB retires. I like the guy there, but I agree, it wasn't a smart thing to do.

Patriots screwed their next decade by going with Brady over Garoppolo. They should have taken a page from the 49ers circa Montana vs Young

I think his job is locked in, as much as anyone can be "locked in" in the NFL. He crashed and burned pretty hard after 16 months in Denver. If things get ugly after TB and BB are gone, Josh may quickly find himself watching NFL games from his living room sofa... Because no one else will ever touch the guy.

I still don't understand that mess. I mean, I understand celebrity ego, but it's just still hard for me to process.

That story, while sad, highlights the ugly reality of how TB (and his ego) operates. Refusing to mentor Garoppolo. Pushing Kraft to make the trade behind Belichick's back. Man... the Pats from 2002-2018 will go down as the greatest dynasty in NFL history. But they definitely mortgaged their future on the JG trade for one year of glory (this year)... that didn't work out after all. And now with Patricia gone, Brady turning 41, and Belichick looking to retirement, things could hit a nasty downhill trajectory fast, and it didn't need to. The Garoppolo/McDaniels combo could've taken them 10 years (or more) into the future.

This McDaniels "change of heart" just reeks of NE management scrambling to save what they know is a sinking ship.

Oh well.

Seems odd because as a head coach you don't really have job security unless you are winning championships. Assuming he takes over when BB retires (which will likely coincide with TB's retirement) the Patriots will be like any other team. How long does the average coach last in the NFL with any given team? IDK, but it doesn't seem like a long time. The Kraft family is going to have to fire him at some point, and then what?

He’s just emulating Bill from years ago. Resembles the Jets if you ask me.

Also will help fuel the rumors that Bill is leaving.

McDaniel's tenure in Denver was not good, but he has stated on numerous occasions on what he did wrong. I think having these years as OC under BB was a good thing.
As far as Jimmy G goes, man, I love that kid. he has so much potential. To say TB isn't going to make it much longer, geez, I don't know. I mean, he threw for 505 yards, no INT in the super bowl. I think he has another 1-3 years in him. Jimmy had to be paid, and you can't pay 2 big QB's. It's a tough call. Can you really let TB go? When SF let Joe go, he missed 2 seasons due to injury.

I agree you can't let TB go, but as a Broncos fan I also view things through a Peyton Manning lens. He was phenomenal his first two years, and then went off a cliff. That 2014 season was rough, and the Broncos' defense barely dragged him across the finish line to win it all for 2015 (Super Bowl 50 played in February 2016). Favre is another example of age coming to kick you in the ass when it comes to playing QB. It will happen to TB. You just can't outrun the clock.

To recap, I agree there's no way the Pats can let TB go right now... but I think forcing the Garoppolo trade to appease a 1-2 year QB was unwise. It just creates more questions than answers. And instability for an NFL franchise is never a good thing. And I know what that instability is like - I'm witnessing it first hand here in Denver. :/

McDaniels got an assload of money and becomes the heir apparent to a successful organization. He's locked in for at least 5 years.

Indy has a crazy owner and unsuccessful organization.

A lot of the owners are probably just chuckling about Indy being dumped. 5 years from now, nobody will remember or care. His level of success in NE will determine his career.

And...... Josh McDaniel's agent just quit.

Career suicide. I don’t understand it. Unless it turns out that the colts flat out lied to him about Luck’s health, and I don’t think that’s what happened.

People will forget all about it with time, people have short-term memories. Billy Donovan did the same thing with Florida and the Orlando Magic, and still got a job with the Thunder 8 years later. If you're a good enough coach, and your services are needed, that's all people care about. I'm sure the next time he gets an offer the other team will make sure to get his signature though.

I think the Colts over hyped him coming to coach...that the deal was not as far along as reported. Reporters all want the hot scoop that sells, and what better time than the Superbowl while he coaches the favored team. By posting that he is the new coach on Twitter, its like peer pressure. No one will remember this in a few years (The Ray Lewis experience)

I actually re-read about Ray Lewis this weekend. Those of us who remember it, remember it wrong. Not only wasn't he involved in the killings (which were ruled self-defense, btw) but he actually flipped and testified against his buddies. Strange that we don't remember it that way.

His agent also represents the Colts GM.... it's kind of a conflict of interest. He needed to dump one of them from the new bad blood and picked the easier choice.
