No not really but they are is jacking up prices for mailing a few chips as of today. http://www.thechipboard.com/index.cgi/page/1/md/read/id/1787369/sbj/bad-news-from-usps/

TLDR - USPS used to charge based on weight in 4oz increments up to 1lb. It’s now pricing all small packages (bubble mailers) under 1lb as 12oz and getting rid of the 4oz and 8oz shipping rates.

EDIT: Change is just for non-CONUS "These new Commercial Pricing rates will affect shipments to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and military addresses—USPS has not announced rate changes for any other locations."

It's not tracked, but there is always the ~$1 non-machinable stamp w 1 chip in an envelope between two pieces of thin cardboard method.

For cheap chips only of course.

But yes, padded envelopes for one chip that is worth <$10 are too much now.

I used to do that with cheap chips that I’d be comfortable replacing. I definitely had at least one break. It’s up to the buyer and seller, but I’m not really comfortable with it.

I just duplicated a couple of my single chip bubble mailings on Pirate Ship. Looks like difference is only 30-40 cents from before using its discounted rates and there are still different prices for different weights. The notice I got discussed "commercial" shipping rates changing, especially non-continental shipping (sorry Canada!).

If you dig deeper you will see that some of the commercial companies like Pirate Ship also have agreements in place that are going to limit the impact of this. eBay does as well but it is not surprising that it is gouging people. I would not consider any pocket lining price eBay gives you to be an arbiter of anything. After all, they are taking a cut of every penny spent on shipping so why would they try to get the best price for anyone? They probably also get a cut of the labels they sell.

Not that any of the sky is falling chickens on Chipguide would know how to input its website address, or even create an account on a modern website, but folks here should be using it.

I have had no damage to the hundreds of chips I have shipped this way, fingers crossed. I would also ground advantage anything of value. I can say though that the untracked part tends to bother peoole. Tracking numbers are so common that I have had people think I am up to something shady for not providing it lol

As a seller, I hate eBay. Hate hate hate it, but sometimes I need those millions of eyeballs. I always buy my shipping at pirateship so they get no cut of that.

Try doing the same thing on pirateship but switching the postage date of tomorrow…

What about using UPS? I mailed a small padded envelope last week (one barrel of chips) using pirate ship and it was cheaper through UPS than USPS.
UPS ground saver uses USPS, maybe certain distances/dimensions are cheaper using UPS?

All moot anyway as I just saw the weight changes are just for non-CONUS locations - Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and military addresses. Sucks for them !

Not so fast…sorry country folk:

Effective today, July 15th, USPS has unified ounce-based Ground Advantage pricing for under 1 pound packages shipped to rural ZIP Codes. This is the same change they recently made for under 1 pound shipments to non-contiguous destinations.

👇 What's changing

All packages under 1 pound shipped to rural ZIP Codes will be charged the 15.99 oz rate. Packages shipped from those rural ZIP Codes remain unaffected (unless shipping to another rural destination).

For example: When shipping to a rural destination, shipping a 2 oz package now costs the same as a 15.99 oz package.

📦 What's NOT changing

  • Most destinations: The current ounce-based rates remain available for shipments to cities and more densely populated areas.
  • Non-contiguous destinations (Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, military addresses): Based off the July 12th rate change, all packages under 1 lb will still be charged the 15.99 oz rate when shipping both to or from those locations.
  • Heavier packages and other services:USPS has not made any other changes.

That still stinks. When I list something for sale on eBay, I’m going to quote the highest possible shipping cost, so I don’t get screwed if rural Jethro buys the thing. Maybe here on pcf, we can work together a little better. But on eBay, I’m not messing around.

you could do shipping where the buyer pays actual postage?

Does that work well on eBay; do buyers embrace it? I know when I’m buying, I’m looking at total cost. So my maximum bid will be directly influenced by the shipping cost. If the shipping cost is uncertain, I’m probably not bidding as much.

it’s based on your shipping address. might not be perfect for singles but i know buyers get sketched out when the shipping they're charged is significantly higher than the actual postage
