I’ve spent $500 on chips, a case, and cards. I’ve only played 9 times with them so far, so the average cost has been $55.56. I need to play more!

I can imagine this sort of misguided math leading to a truly unfortunate outcome.

One could seek out a set of dice chips from the thrift store for $5, play one game a year and end up with an index number less than $1. Is that a good thing? Hard to imagine someone here is advocating used dice chips or worse as the ideal chip set. Maybe low numbers on this index indicate bad thing rather than desirable things even if the OP implies otherwise.

Who is better off, the chipper who tables a $10,000+ grail set once a year, then moves on to his/her next remarkable set. Or a cheapskate who tables a used set of dice chips every week?

Maybe the highest score on the index is the winner. Assuming they host a minimum number of games. After all, you can hit infinity on the index just by never hosting.

You have been found wanting. Thanks for posting, but we are not a value community; we are a quality community. Dice chips don't warrant you fretting over.

55 bucks wouldn't cover a barrel of my most common chip, that I felt. I have singles that are 5 times that. I've spent $2800 just to get the specific card setups I wanted. I have about 14 setups I kept, and 12 of them are still new. Meanwhile, I buy $45 setups about every 3 months. I have paid for art that is about 3 times that, and I haven't used it on projects yet. I host at most 13 times a year and mix in 4 sets of chips. I rarely sleep, and when I do, I get maybe 5 hours a night. I would never give a second thought to the money I have spent on this hobby. In fact, I've only lost sleep over chips I didn't purchase, Mexican Rose Chickens - I'm still wondering if I should have passed @ 22 USD per chip.

You have larger problems than money if you have to justify purchases. In an effort to be socratic, allow me to answer your question with a question:

What is the value you've assigned to the quality of the time and entertainment you spent with friends and family?

If you argue that money spent on chips= better quality time with friends, you have lost the plot. Poker is just as fun with chips worth 200$ than a set worth 2000+. Most poker players couldnt care less about how expensive your setup is, they just want to play some cards. You buy the chips for your self, not for others... Ok. I’ll be the first to admit that my chips are for my pleasure and most of my players could play with sluggos and never complain, but I don’t care. After having over 60 sets pass through my hands it’s time to rip the band aid off and own up to my addiction to clay discs. I’m fine with that.

Maybe, but think about SHARING a nice set up with friends!

There are players who care (at least a bit) what they play with.

It is way more fun to play a nice set of chips, no matter how expensive they were.
