Going through the Steak Thread got me thinking, what's everyone's favorite sides to go with a steak?

For me, it changes often and each time, but I'll break it into categories

Starches
  • Mac and cheese
  • Alfredo
  • baked potato
  • roasted mini potatoes
  • steak fries
  • hawaiian rolls
  • brazillian cheese bread

Veggies
  • sauteed mushrooms, sometimes with onions
  • grilled asparagus
  • roasted garlic heads
  • steamed broccoli
  • roasted brussel sprouts
  • corn
  • roasted sweet potatoes
  • grilled jalapenos

More meat?
  • lobster/lobster tail
  • scallops
  • shrimp

beverage to wash it down
  • Red wine (bold cabernet)
  • old fashioned

What are you all doing for your perfect steak dish with accompanying sides?

Adding some pictures for mouth watering goodness.

My mouth actually started watering reading the OP.

Hard to beat mashed potatos (1:1 ratio of potato to butter, of course).

Creamed spinach also.

Also, I'm cooking up some steaks this weekend now! :ROFLMAO:

Of course!!! Amazing. Sometimes on Thursday nights I make Loaded Cheesy Tots (but no steak) which are good during the break
That takes me back to our college days where the loaded hash browns from IHOP or Waffle house was the only thing I wanted after a lot of drinking..

if i'm grilling a steak and i don't have anyone else to please, i like grilled or sauteed baby bellas and creamed spinach as my sides.

if my picky family is also involved, i go with nathan's crinkle cut fries, or english roasties (using beef tallow as the fat) if i am feeling really ambitious.

Sounds like I really need to learn how to make a good potatoes au gratin

Any vegetable is fine except asparagus. I have no idea how people tolerate how it makes your urine smell. It makes me think that something is seriously wrong with me, so I’ve sworn it off for like.

Any kind of potato that isn’t orange.

Give me a cheap Cabernet or a beer.

Creamed spinach is my top veggie choice by a mile in a steak setting.

I also want a potato side, but I’ll happily take almost any of those. Mashed, scalloped, au gratin, twice baked, they’re all great.

Surprised at the lack of love for mac & cheese. When well made - creamy shells with bacon - its my perfect steak companion. Old fashion or straight up bourbon to drink.

And crab cake as an appetizer FTW.

I feel we need a Maryland vs Cajun crabcake competition.

I don’t know if it’s a regional thing or what, but I never grew up with Mac and cheese as a side dish. Occasionally there was a big baked Mac and cheese as a main course. But there was never Mac and cheese on the side at my house. First time I ever saw that was probably at Boston Chicken/Market.

Lobster is 1000% overrated.
Definitely overpriced, but still very good :)

Maybe it is a southern thing but mac and cheese is staple down here. A main course mac and cheese is also very good! Add some grilled chicken, mushrooms, and bacon pieces....
