Hello all,

I'm making this post mostly to figure out if someone can help me identify if theres a specific sort of chip that's clearly my style, because I'm not really sure what I'm into but in some time I'd like to assemble a nice set and I'd like to do some self-reflection before that.

Firstly,

I like basically every Horseshow chip here, ESPECIALLY the 2.50 with jus
thats in the upper right corner of this image.

I hate hot stamp chips.
I really like https://brpropoker.com/collections/tribal-masks BRPros DDLM and Tribal Masks oversized inlay chips, and I'd say I'm generally a fan of oversized inlay chips

These chips :

look really awesome, although they are definitely out of my price range. Same with these chips.

I'm aware empress star and tiger palace have a ton of lore behind them, which greatly inflates their prices. I think what I really
like about these chips is the fact that their edge designs are very pretty and colorful (I'd say I probably
prefer the tiger palace chips.) Are there other chips like these? And how does one go about making (eg designing, manufacturing) a set
like the tiger palace set (which I think is a "fantasy set" and not paulsons?)

For example,

I think an edge design like this would be so good with just one more bright color (and is pretty good nonetheless.)
Is there a name for chips with awesome edge designs? Are all such chips like 2$/chip, or can one usually find these chips for cheaper?

Yes, the Tiger Palace set is a fantasy set but it's not not Paulson, it's in fact a Paulson fantasy set. So is the Empress star set.

It does sound to me that "colorful" is the operative word here though since you are referencing both different Paulson sets as well as BRpro ceramic sets as your likes (vastly different in terms of feel and cost). It is entirely possible to create a custom set design with all kinds of colors and edge spots using the Paulson designer tool for instance and have it made through the monthly group buys that's run on here (ceramic/ceramic hybrid chips).

If you want clay chips (like Paulsons) your options are (1) buying existing sets/different chips for a combined mixed set that you could semi-customize with your own labels or (2) wait for CPC to re-open, where you can design your own clay chip set from scratch. Design and color options are limited compared to Paulson but still pretty fking great.

I think what I'm really into is the striking vibrant colors of the tiger palace set and the three colored-edge designs.

I noticed you mentioned that the paulson designer tool would be for ceramic group buys (Tinas?) Does this mean that Tina can do everything on here: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/pcf/pokerchiptool/

But CPC can only do everything on here:

?
If that's the case, I'm very surprised that there are no Tina tiger palace chips (or at least I haven't seen any)

Using other people’s design without permission is not cool, especially not chips like the Tiger Palace which were designed by a pcfer.

Tina et al will print whatever you send their way but surely you can come up with something original instead. Or pick any of the many ready to go sets in the group buy.

Yes, CPC can ”only” do those colors and spots. You’d be surprised how many wonderful sets have been created using those though. Plenty of em here:

I see, that makes sense. I think CPC chips might be for me then, if I can pick enough sparkly colors for my liking.

People ordering huge amounts of chips without notice to other members, in order to re-sale them at huge profit are unethical, and shouldn't enjoy the protection of any ethical rules.

I'm kind of starting to feel that way. Like Tigers were a for profit venture, can't be made again, and have now had a long period of exclusivity to make their money. The set is for all intents and purposes a public set. While I'm not going to go off and copy it anytime soon, I'm not going to shame anyone for making a replica on a web or jester mold. Sunset Beach, the Star Lines, Big Top, Royal Princess; none of those enjoy eternal protection and have all been Tina'd.

just add your own inlay. IMO the color patterns anyone can use. No need to copy the tiger.

That's a pretty fair compromise honestly. It'd actually be kinda funny to poke fun that they are replicas and label them Bobcat Shack or something.

Interesting takes, I respectfully disagree. By those measures wouldn’t it then be even more unethical to profit off of copied designs?

Personally, I’ve never liked any of the China knock offs. I think they devalue the hobby as a whole and are utterly uninteresting.

I was today years old when I realized that there now is a chip designer tool for the group buy chips. That is awesome! Making a custom set exactly the way one wants has never been easier. Why not design something original using that?

Yes. Makes sense if you get an opportunity to take a financial risk, put time and effort into it and then sell at a loss.

Good luck with that!

What financial risk is there with buying a ton of stuff you designed and having to resell it?
I could explain but…

The selling at a loss was sarcasm. As in, it would be stupid not to make profit.

I wouldn't call it "lore"

"NAGB"(Not A Group Buy) is the term for fantasy chips produced by Paulson, designed and bought by individuals. Paulson "only" sells to casinos. It requires a contact or a work around to get them to make chips for a private individual.

Tigers, like all NAGB before them, are designed to appeal to this market. They have a limited supply and become fashionable. FOMO is real amongst chippers. Previous NAGB sort of organically grew their prices amongst collectors. Tigers started high and now that's just where we are, probably with all future NAGB.

Of course!

Edit: and it would also be unethical to copy anybody's personal design without permission; a design used for a personal set only, like the Carmel Casino or the Athenian Owl Club.

Faros did not fly off the shelves... There were unsold sets for awhile. If there was a 100% markup in price, the break even point is half the chips purchased.
