Risk of stacking racks? (1 Viewer)

It recently came to my attention that there may be some risk to storing my chips in racks stacked on top of each other.

I have a mix of full ceramic no-molds (BRPro) & Tina hybrid ceramics. I stack them 3 high in Chipco racks in my closet. Is there a risk to them warping or getting dented on one side?

Do I need to invest in a new set of Justin racks that enclose and eliminate any additional weight when stacked?

While nearly all members that stack acrylic racks have not had an issue even 5+ racks high, there have been a small amount of reports of issues.
Storing chips in Justin racks or Warneke-style boxes should eliminate the slight chance of a problem

Jeez, I wasn’t paying attention and didn’t read the OP very well…I thought this was about clays.

Tina chips? Stack racks sky high, I’m sure they’ll be fine!

Depending on the chips, you may not be comfortable with the wobble.
1000pc birdcages are 5 high anyhow.

I do similar, birdcage and then about 10 racks on top. I’ve never seen chips wobble from the stacking, if they have any wobble, they had that wobble when I obtained them.

Like standard chip racks used to transport chips form the chip bank to the table and vice versa or are you talking about chip "storage" racks?

I'm not sure that I know the difference... the ones that you take from the bank to the table. I don't know of others, other than Justin racks.
 
I had an issue with the specific Chipco racks I had, as there was a flat notch on the underside of the racks which made direct contact with the edge of one of the barrels. I switched to enclosed Tina racks which eliminated the problem.

I don’t have the racks anymore but I may still have the damaged chips (Paulson RHC, Paulson 36mm). I’ll take a look when I get home.

I also might have posted it in another thread, but it would have been over a year ago.

This is hard to show in photos without the actual racks to show where the notches sat, and I’m sure these chips have been turned and moved, but this is the best I could do.

The flea bites in chips 2-5 from the top of each left barrel were more “pushed”, vs standard wearing away/chipping, and you can see a little bit of scraping on some other chips in the barrels.

Again hard to outline in the photos, but was enough of an issue to have me change racks. I don’t think this is an issue with all acrylic racks, but these were older Chipco racks.

I store most of my chips in racks with a cover, they stack a little less snappy and you might have a little less room, because they are more like blocks not connecting into each other but for about 20 years now, I never had any clay or ceramic chip being damaged.
