Hello everyone,

I'm new to this hobby, and I'm here to learn. I'm about to choose my first set of chips.

Samples are here, and I'm trying to decide between the the Royal 43mm and the Pharaoh's chips. I read old posts (2016-2018) about china clays break like gingerbread after time regardless of usage, oiling or storing conditions. But this kind of china clay is the past, new china clays feels more plasticy/rubbery, and I assume are more durable and long lasting.

The Royals feels exactly this. No smell, no factory dust, no chalky feeling, no pale spots, but a little shine and a little feel of plastic. It would be a good choice for me, nice chips.
But I like the Pharaoh's design better. The only problem with them is they are not exectly like the Royals. No smell either, but came a little dusty, and the material feels a little rougher (no shine at all), and some have pale spots, like the material was dried off. (I know I shoud oil china clays, but since I'm not decided yet I didn't buy any oil.) I'm worried about the Pharaoh's are not that durable like the Royals, and I don't want to buy chips that doesn't lasts long. Are "new" china clay materials lifespan even predictable?

My Pharaoh's samples doesn't look like if they are manufactured too long ago, I tried to snap in half some with my fingers but neither snapped, but that doesn't mean the material is long lasting. What do you guys think of it?

Thank you for your answers.

following (I love Pharao's design too... But I read on that forum they don't last many years)

I also have samples of both (pharao, royals) and a set of Banks. All of them are imo made of the same material.
Just give the pharaos a rub with a drop of somekind of oil (for the sample it really doesn't much what kind) and you should see those dry spots disappear.
So my advice would be to just go with whatever design/size/denoms you like the best.

As a guy with big ole bear paws, 39mm always seem so tiny after handling 43mm.

Yes, absolutly get samples.
After I got most of the china clay samples, I would have gotten pharaos instead of the Banks. They clearly resemble more of a casino chip, while the banks are a little to 'clean' design wise.
Also though that the Royals are great, but I don't like 43mm at all.

That would be my experience. I purchased a sample set when they were introduced years ago. I did not purchase a set back then, because I did not like the quality of the labels, which looked as if they had been printed on a chip ink jet printer, especially when compared to Paulson pharaos.

Last year I had a look at the samples again. I unfortunately dropped one chip on my hardwood floor, and it cracked (the chip, not the floor ;)). The chip feels pretty brittle, and the edge of the fracture is not smooth, but grainy. It looks as if they did not apply enough heat to completely melt the material before it was molded.

However, my samples are almost 15 years old. New chips today could be completely different.

My first set was cc pharaohs. If you have the patience, you can take a damp cloth and simply rub off the manufacturing dust. Others here will suggest using a little mineral oil (I’ve done that too but imo not necessary and since they’re plastic you end up wiping it all off vs the chip absorbing it like a clay chip). I actually came to enjoy the chalky feel of a brand new barrel of pharaohs with the dust, made them feel more clay like.

You can also simply be patient and get them in play, as the oils from players hands and the shuffling will naturally make the dust wear off and the chip more oily/shiny looking.

I still love my CC pharaohs even next to clay chips after all these years. There’s a time and place for them always. Good luck!

I have some royals if you land there. My buddy’s love them but they only got used once.

Will keep a set as travel / loaner chips but I have some extras that can go.

Lmk.
