Been a while since I've posted one of these - interesting hand from a home game this weekend.

Context:
Casual game, many irregular players - a lot of limping and calling with mediocre hands.

Cash game - .25/.50

SB: 50 BB
BB (Hero): 180 BB
UTG : irrelevant
UTG +1 : irrelevant

MP: 50 BB
HJ: 120 BB
CU: irrelevant
BTN: irrelevant

MP flat calls 1BB
HJ flat calls 1BB
SB completes to 1BB
BB (Hero) looks down at :jc::jd:

Action on hero.

Raising to 4 - 6 BB allows you to get the short stacks committed on the turn should they stick around after you bet a flop where you want to continue.

Fold or open jam. That's my philosophy with Jacks. I don't try to get cute anymore.
More than enough this falls into "Only get called if you're beat" territory.
It got through when I earned a 3-way chop last weekend in a Planet Hollywood daily; then again I was the biggest stack at my table right before 9-handed ... and I had 22 BBs.

NO villain reads? Hard to make a plan without them. No table reads? What is a big raise here that gets a limper to fold?

Knowing nothing, raise big. Maybe 8BB - 10BB to go. Only want one caller, but better no callers than five way action OOP

Does the villian over call or over fold. That affects my sizing.

Only what i posted in the OP. First time in this game and only have observed a lot of limping and mediocre showdowns.

The classic OMC move here is to bet big. Like 5 to 10 BB big. Going too big will telegraph your hand to that type of

I’d keep it simple an actually bet small, especially since it’s on the button. I say 4 BB.

Agreed with above, 8-10 BB raise, $4-$5.

Also note in a $0.5/$1 game last month, had JJ twice:

Exhibit a) I ran JJ into KK last month all in pre (AQs also called), KKs held.
Exhibit b) Later in same game, UTG villain raises to $5 (has 250ish BB), I’m sitting with 740BB, have JJ in MP+1, I raise to 25 BB, two callers and then villain goes all in for total $250 ($200+ forget specific). I tank for a few mins then fold as do other 2 players. Villain shows A5o - we were playing the progressive NIT game and he was feeling ‘spicy’. We ran out the board and JJ would’ve held.

Exhibit c) in a game earlier this year I spiked a J on the river to felt and cooler my buddy for full house > full house.

In summary, I’ve had JJ and played them wrong twice and got lucky once in my recent home games. So eh, don’t listen to me >.>

In a 25/50c game making it $2 doesn’t do anything to get limpers to fold because it’s only $2. Make it $5 to maaaaaybe get a limper or 2 to fold.
Yeah, it's game dependent but generally my loose-casual .25/.50 players rarely fold to anything less than 10x pre. Even then, I'm still getting multiple callers.

Given the specific scenario in OP, I like $5 but could go as high as $10 depending on the players.

Hero raises to 8BB

Multiple at the table groan. "$4? Pre flop? You haven't even seen the first few cards! I really wanted to play this hand. etc. etc."

MP folds
HJ calls 8 BB
SB folds

Pot is 18 BB

Flop comes and is...good, but dynamic? :jh::9h::8c:

Action on hero.

What game is this

Why do you do this to yourself

Pre I like the size

flop I don’t have leads on this board so I would check (and raise) but if you bet this hand probably fine

Same flop as this hand btw…great fold by Polk here
