Haven't seen BR Pro Poker mentioned, since you’ve increased your budget, I think they should also be considered.

You’re at a good price point, so you can have just about any chip available for retail. Just gotta do the dirty work in acquiring samples and seeing what you like.

I think China clays are decent alternatives if one doesn’t wanna break the bank. Do prefer the Tina hybrids, but I have owned a set of the Royals that I really liked.

It’s easy for us more seasoned chippers to dismiss the cheap alternatives but I guess sometimes one has to make one’s own mistakes/develope the acquired taste for premiums (which is where people usually will be heading if they stick around this place).

Watched the Hobbyphyllic video and I think the Olympics look and sound pretty good but if warping is to be expected they would be a HARD pass.

Only been here for a little bit and have made numerous mistakes along the way and the only set i am happy with, hear no complaints about, is a 43mm Tina web hybrid set, it’s got a good price, color, weight, sound, shuffling fun, stack well - feel good to play with. Hosted a 2-table tourney with them recently amongst a crew that don't know a Paulson from a Cpc and they enjoyed them.

Exactly. I own some nice clay chips (some leaded) I've either bought or were gifted over the years, but no way I'm using these as a "family set" for 'barbarian play' during holiday get-togethers like Thanksgiving and Christmas (poker and board games). I currently use sluggos for this target market, but I wanted to upgrade to something better. I tried some chip samples/friend's chips out before finally deciding on a CC set. When I first went in, I was sure I was going Ceramic.

One thing I really, really hate is flash (primarily edge flash) and it's pretty well a standard on cheaper slugged plastics (the ones we currently use have smooth edges but with some label flash/nipples), and even with ceramic, no matter how sanded they were from the company, I was still finding slight edge nubs/depressions or edge discoloration here and there, even on the expensive ones - some of the cheaper Ceramics have more flash than a Flash Thompson + Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five collab. The CCs are nice that way because they inject from the top (under the label) and even when switching a few labels to get additional denominations, I didn't find any flash at all.

In terms of sound, Paulson clay is my favorite, but I like CC over Ceramic, and the "feel" of a CC is better (to me) than a Ceramic - Both are forms of plastic, but I like how the CCs just 'feel" softer. And some Ceramic chips are quite slippery and can get worse over time as the 'tread' is lost. The wealth of designs for Ceramic are great, but for me, there are as many pros as cons. As for the CC smell, I have a very sensitive nose, and while I can smell plastic sluggos from a mile away, the CCs I tried out never bothered me. The Hybrid chips are a nice compromise, but the ones I've seen still have slight flash/nibs on the edges, which bothers the heck out of me.

Personally, if you need an inexpensive set, especially if it's going to be used by non-Poker people (kids, uncouth friends/relatives), and you still want a "better than plastic sluggos" level of class, and you hate flash, then CC is a good choice as these are both inexpensive and readily available. And they don't have flash.

Do the current hybrid chips still have some level of edge flash or edge nubs/nipples/indents/discoloration?

There is a little nipple of varying size on each chip - but the only time i remember is when someone asks =)

Regards to indent, discoloration, flashing or any weirdness on the edges - i have not seen any. In true PCF form - get samples and judge em for your fit and taste - easy to do with Tina.

I never said I was offended, lol, I already made my case as to why I disagree, I think the Olympus chips are great, I do t find them to be slippery at all, and I think they feel and sound great, that is what I was disagreeing to, the post was saying they sounded bad and were slippery

Hence why I said I completely disagree, I think they sound good, I like them, at least the sets I have owned. I own the Olympus set, and the Desert Palms from Apache

China Clays have character, their lower resonance when shuffling is a kin to a chain of farts. (Maybe thats why they smell?)

Still, much more pleasing than the bag of legos sound that Tinas have.

I won’t argue that 39mm Tina no molds or cards molds don’t sound like a bag of legos, but now is a good time to insert this video - the sound of Tina 43mm Greek mold, compared to the sound of Paulson leaded 43mm house mold. Not all Tina’s sound bad.

That sound was part of my decision - i am not a chip grail hunter, i got the foondsalow ailment, and while i like building playable sets - it could take month/years - the 43mm is just always at the ready to be used - been contemplating getting a cash one =).
