Thoughts on Using Non-Standard Colors? (1 Viewer)

Neither of my custom cpc sets follow "standard" color themes. Do what makes you happy as long as you can avoid dirty stacks.

Here's the Elk's set I just received with non-standard colors. Again, from playing poker for 35+ years, most people don't know about the 'standard' colors.

I'm in California, and liked the idea of doing some non-Vega$ standard colors, so I just decided to go with whatever I thought looked cool. My first Tina's order is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, so I'm curious to see how they turn out. I wanted a very basic label with a denomination, I think because old school Fitzgerald's in Reno had those when I first went to casinos in the mid-90's.

I really do not like non standard colors. I’ve always had standard colors and most of the serious home games I play in use them. Most people are not poker chip enthusiasts so when I see it, it feels bush league…and it usually is. Also, if you are fortunate enough to be close to casinos, most players will be used to standard colors. I have seen people through the wrong chips in betting at games with dice chips and random colors for denominations being used.

I have 2 nonstandard colour cash sets. Our players love them not necessarily for their colours but for the feel of the clay. One is leaded shaped inlays and the other is unleaded hot stamp.

I like that some can't handle 'non-standard' colors. Hopefully that lowers the price of non-standard sets, or makes them easier to obtain.

Around here (I’ve seen it in Boston, CT and NH) they’ll often call bounty tournaments by the name of the color of the chip that represents the value of the bounty. So a green chip bounty tournament is a tournament with a $25 bounty, a black chip bounty tournament is a tournament with a $100 bounty, and a purple chip bounty is a tournament with a $500 bounty. Safe to assume they don’t do that with non-standard colors? Or do they?

I wouldn’t know what a yellow chip bounty was so I’d say that naming convention works best for standard colors

Thoughts on Using Non-Standard Colors?​

I use non-standard colors for many of my sets.

For denoms that will share the table, choose colors so as to not confuse your players, and minimize the chance of dirty stacks. I even try to avoid spots that use the same colors as the base of other near-denom chips.

if using fracs with your non-standard color set, they should be visually different from $ chips. Green 25c with blue $25 would spell trouble. That's why many people like hotstamps for fracs only, better use a different style for fracs imho.

My main cash set uses non-standard colors.
As the denom is clearly written, I never faced any issue.
