I’ve set up a new dedicated server with upgraded specs running AlmaLinux 10. The plan is to migrate PCF to it when my current hosting plan comes up for renewal early next year.

After years of using WHM/cPanel, I’ve decided to go without a control panel this time. I’ve tested DirectAdmin, Plesk (which is owned by cPanel), Webmin, and a few others, but for hosting just one main site and maybe a test site, they all feel like overkill and add too much bloat. Plus, cPanel pricing keeps climbing. Since I’m on a bare metal server, not shared, VPS, or cloud hosting, I'm forced pay for a 100-account license, which is just unreasonable.

I finished installing the LAMP stack last night and got the firewall configured. I’m really enjoying managing everything through the command line. If you have any tips or suggestions for running a server this way, I’d love to hear them.

Make sure to set up server backups! And keep in mind that the commandline won't ask you "are you sure?" all the time, so be careful while you're becoming proficient with it.

In general, tools like ChatGPT are pretty good these days to give you answers for anything you might run into or wonder how to do.

Auto backups for sure. I'll have to find a new method. I currently use Jetbackup with cPanel that sends them to my cloud bucket, and I also make a copy that is sent to my home NAS. (plus the host does their own)

I should mention that I am using Cockpit which came with Alma 10. Makes things a little easier.
