I rescued this throw away bike. Front and back tires are weather rotted, lots of rust on the gear and rear brake cables. Sits great.

I am going to take it to the bike shop for a tune up and whatever other work is suggested. Looking for feedback from bike enthusiasts, specifically on recommended improvements and opinions on the model.

I intend to use it as a road bike for exercise.

Thinking of going with thinner tires. Up in the air on the handlebars. I am leaning towards keeping them as is. Parts of the bike look outdated. A quick internet search tells me the bike was manufactured around 2005.

I’ll bet the suggestion will be to buy a new bike. No joke, last time I checked (which was a couple of years ago) it’s getting pretty hard to find 8-speed parts at any prices, let alone reasonable. So if anything in that drivetrain is rusted or worn, you might have a project on your hands. But good luck!!

FYI, I have a similar model in my bike stable. It’s a great riding, comfortable hybrid. However, it’s only worth about $200 in excellent condition. A tune up and tires will cost more than that unless you do the work.

I’d either start learning about bicycle maintenance or flip it for $50. Then buy a minty one via Facebook marketplace. Even a brand new low end Schwinn or other brand might be better at $200 new. (I’d take a 15+ year old Trek, Marin, Specialized, etc. over a new Schwinn, but I work on bikes.)

Pictured below is my $130 Craigslist pickup with added fenders.

Good luck!

P.S. Your bikes looks pretty good. Just WD-40 the crap out of everything, then wipe and lube it up. Start there.

That’s a really easy to use combo trigger shifter-brake lever by Shimano. Durable and easy to lube, too.

I have them on my Martin hybrid (in silver). eBay is loaded with 8-speed parts and Shimano still makes and sells them brand new worldwide.

First off - it's not worth the time to drive it to my house to even check out, let alone the $2-300 it would take to get it up and riding well. Throw it straight back in the fiery mordor dumpster from whence it came.

You're gonna be way better off just spending $2-300 bucks grabbing something half decent of CL or FB marketplace. The bike market has a glut of cheap inventory never before seen in these quantities after the pandemic lol.

3min search, you're gonna want something more like these

WTF? A testament to how insulated and sedentary our society has become.
Pretty much. But not all of us. I just jumped on said bike to pickup paint at local hardware store. Plus the grocery store. I do errands and bike for pleasure multiple times per week. And I’m a boomer!
