Cash Game Why so many $5s? (1 Viewer)

On forum advice, I have ended up with this 800-chip breakdown to cover all of .25/.25, .25/.50, 1/1 and 1/2:

100 x 25c
200 x $1
400 x $5
80 x $25
20 x $100

I have seen many breakdowns with this kind of shape.

My question is: why do we want so many $5 chips?

I understand the desire to have plenty of workhorse chips. But the desire to have racks and racks of them seems to be uniquely common with the $5 chip--way more than, say, the $1, which is arguably the workhorse at .25/.25 and .25/.50. I have looked through the forum and found no clear answer to why this is. 200 of them seems to be enough for a well-functioning game, no?

And yet, clearly I myself have succumbed to "more 5s". In my case I attribute it to wanting to bring the positive aspects of the "casino experience" to my game, and this apparently includes having generous stacks of red chips. But then why do casinos do it that way? Is it just that the $5 is the most versatile denomination? (It seems so to me.)

Is it just that red chips look good?
OP went with the optimal, full-rack 800-chip set recommended by these forum sages and fine fellas:

But TBH, I'm always unsure that 4 racks of $5s is sufficient. That's why my Riverside set has a few extra, just in case:

 :p :cool :ninja:

Anyone who wants to play poker with like 15 chips in front of them isn’t a chip collector. You just can’t be.

My game used to have 20/20/20 starting stacks at .25/1/5 for $125. We regularly got 6-8 racks of $5s in play (I have 13 racks for multitable) and it was awesome seeing big stacks get moved around.

This. Which is why I have 2000 x $5 chips. lol

And he ain’t lying—here are the Riversides in play at Bergs’ game:

has this thread degenerated into just a thread of $5's pr0n yet?

i advocate that everyone should have only 2 racks of $5's and dump the rest on the classifieds for me and a certain booyah to buy.
I think those that are advocating for fewer 5s just never have had a chance to play with the Bay Area chippers. One night and I’m hooked. This was a small stack too, compared to the rest of your games.

I love lots of chips in play. Games play looser in general with more chips. Similar to a limit game where players have racks of chips so what’s the big deal to call a raise, it’s only 8 chips!

And just because you get a lot of $5’s in play doesn’t mean you can’t get big chips in play too.

I played in a new game last week where the host is not in the MOAR $5s category.

For a $1/2 game a starting stack of $300 was:

$1 x 30
$5 x 24
$25 x 6

All rebuys and add-ons were $25s and $100s. So on a table of 8 players, we had about 2 racks of $5s in play. I was actually surprised that it worked just fine. And this was by choice, not necessity, as I saw that he had several more racks of $5s available.

Too many denominations gets dysfunctional.
Too many chips of any denomination gets dysfunctional too, but this is not understood around here; it's considered fun. Wrong, IMHO
I don’t know about anyone else but I enjoy having so many chips it’s dysfunctional.

Now fracs. They’re useless.

I love how this thread has devolved into $5 chip deep stack pr0n!

Edit: Chip fetishism is another issue. You could use thousands of chips in your bath tub, just like Scroodge McDuck
Now I really want to see someone fill a bathtub with chips. Anyone?

Players' stacks AND bets should be readily countable. Not the case with tons of chips.

How many chips is too many chips for you? I guess if the stacks are dirty or in stacks of something weird like 14, it’d be a pain but stacks of 20 shouldn’t be an issue.

As long as they are not dirty I never have an issue eyeballing stacks of any size.

Is this a raked game or a game with a dealer working for tips? Very strange to see $30 in $1’s in every starting stack unless they are being pulled off the table regularly.
