Edit again:
I hope I didn’t word this wrong. Again, this isn’t about being a mooch. This is just asking if, regardless of whether you’re paying or not, is a meal part of your poker routine?

I see a lot of discussion about food at poker games. Hell I even put out the hot dog roller out of courtesy - but people aren’t usually eating a meal’s worth. Personally I don’t want to eat at a home game, and for most of the home games I’ve been to, there’s not much eating going on besides maybe snacks.

So I’m curious how many people actually want to and expect to eat a meal at a poker game, or if all the non-eaters are just ignoring these food threads. I don’t care if it’s the host putting out a four-course meal before the game or if everybody’s chipping in for pizza halfway through - you know the culture of your games. Snacks don’t count. Do you expect to eat a meal at the poker game?

Edit:
Haha. I don’t think it’s a mooch thing at all. And I’m not trying to say DO YOU DEMAND FOOD? And it’s got nothing to do with who pays. I’m just asking if eating a meal is part of your poker culture.

No. Make the poll results public. I want to see who the mooches are.

Hey hey hey... I'm no mooche! I'll gladly chip in a couple of bucks for a good steak. The couple that host the monthly tournaments collects 10 from anyone that wants pizza and they have a delivery set up. At the second break we take about 15 minutes and eat.

If there isn't going to be a food option I like to know so I can bring some sustenance. I'd hate to bust out because I was getting weak and couldn't think straight.

Only if it's mentioned as part of the event, but otherwise I don't expect a thing and either eat before accordingly or bring a snack if I feel I might want/need it.

I don't at my game primarily because it's a 3-4 hours tops a couple times a month. It's a mid-week game and starts late enough so people can get home from work, get something to eat and make it to the game. It's a short enough duration that it would take a large fraction of the time away from playing cards.

I personally have had a couple bad experiences with folks eating at the table that I try to discourage folks from bringing their take-out with them to the game. There's nothing worse than opening the cage of chips after a few weeks off to the stench of rancid french fry grease that's been fermenting unnoticed since the last game.

No.

I am familiar with one game from years ago where the guy who ran it was really into barbecue and things like that so he always had loads of food but I would never go to the game expecting food.

I have, and others I know, arrived at games let’s say around say 7 o’clock and because of traffic ir whatever did not have time to get dinner so I’ll grab a sandwich somewhere and bring it with me.

Am I a first time guest to a new game?
Than absolutely not. I don’t assume anything, and I come prepared for anything.

Is it a regular game?
Then I’d hope that host sets expectations. I think it’s weird to not know what to expect. Kinda bizarre for someone to host and not share the time, location, food on hand, etc.

So I don’t know how to answer as a guest. I guess yes, I expect to have a meal if they say we’re doing meal, and no I don’t expect to eat if they said we aren’t do full meals.

I play in a game where the host often, but not always, serves dinner or heavy snacks. I always serve light-to-heavy snacks when I host.

But in general, I don't expect the host to provide anything food-wise, and I will usually eat a meal right before I go to a game.

That’s an interesting point I hadn’t really considered. Since I don’t expect to eat AT a game, I guess I just assume other people are the same way, and I don’t even mention food when I’m giving out the game details to a new guy.
When I went to @Roslindale game, he said food would be served, and that was great. So I didn’t eat at home, I got there and he fed us well. Very much appreciated. But if he hadn’t said that, I’d have just eaten at home instead.

We often have an early dinner before our cash games. It’s common for me to grill various meats and just last Saturday we had wings and homemade lasagna. I always have snacks, water, bourbon and beer around as well. Most of the other hosts in our group do the same. It’s good poker but it’s also good company around here.

We do have a pre-game dinner at our games.

Most of the time, it's Door Dashed Indian, Mexican, Chinese, etc. Dinner in the dining room, not at the poker table.
Sometimes it's a home cooked meal, like a pot of chili or spagetti/meatballs, lasagna, etc.
In the past, we used to each toss $ chips for food to the person ordering when starting, but for the past couple years, the host has provided dinner.

During the game, it's the typical snacks - nuts, chips, pretzels, etc. Typically wine vs beer.

Nope I don’t expect it but I do order pizza for my game and people kick in $5. Thats because we play on Friday nights and start right after work.
So but that kinda feels like a yes to me - you’re expecting there to me pizza at the game.
Or maybe it’s like my hot dog roller - just a courtesy.

That’s another yes.
Why am I seeing no yesses on the poll. I worded it badly didn’t I?

The friends/family I play with generally expect a meal since we start early (6pm - 3am, it goes that late sometimes) but it's always eat first or take a break and eat and continue to play. Rarely is it a play poker for 2 hours and leave type of thing.
That’s another yes.

When I read it, I interpreted it as the players expect a meal prepared by the host every time free of charge. But then I saw your edit and changed my vote

You asked if they expect to eat - they’re answering with a response of what they actually do.

They reg eat at their ongoing games. If they went to a new game and had no forewarning, would they expect to eat?

I always tell people what I’m making…toasted rav, sliders, or whatever. Almost everyone brings some other food item or alcohol.

I want to make sure the drunks have food in their stomach so they last more than 4 orbits before they start telling the exact same dirty joke they tell every game…

Hey! Hey!…why’d Blake (insert new name each game) cross the road?

Because his d!ck was stuck in the chicken!

We are laughing at you, Dave, not with you. But, your new joke about STDs was hilarious…

They aren’t answering your question, it’s an issue of comprehension. You asked if they expect - they’re answering with a subjective response of what they actually do.
Well to me, I would eat before I left unless I EXPECTED that I’d be eating there. So, probably poor word choice on my part. But that’s how it made sense in my brain.

I host twice weekly and do not discourage people from getting Uber Eats or bringing something to eat. Nobody is setting up a buffet or anything but I don’t need someone passing out from low blood sugar.

I have water and soda. My fridge is stocked with holdover beer from each passing week. I’m married to a big shot with Dunkin’ Donuts so a couple of dozen of those tasties have become a regular over the last several weeks.

When making invites a while back someone asked me once “What do you serve for food?” and when I said I don’t, they looked flabbergasted.

I said “You should call Golden Corral and ask them what time their poker game starts.” They replied “Golden Corral doesn’t have a poker game.” And I rebutted “And I don’t serve food.”

Maybe, maybe, just maybe if it was a monthly game then maybe. But no.

I host twice a week. Not happening.

And then there is the mess, the smell, the “accidents.”

I provide the equipment, the venue, and the players. I setup, clean up. Twice a week, I’m basically their mom.

No bonus chip for being a member of the clean plate club. Lol

It’s a poker game. Not necessarily feeding time.

If it’s my first time, even if they say food is being provided, I don’t expect anything. Because even if there really is a spread there, do I really need new peoples first impression of me to be sitting there shoving pre with lettuce hanging from my beard?

Queue 10 games later and after ordering pizza to their house I’m screaming “call” blind from the kitchen with a mouthful of cheesy bread.

When I host , I would provide a very nice spread of food for my buddies. For me it was about more than trying to win money from them. Just hanging out and having fun, eating , drinking, smoking, sometimes you win some money.

I host about 2X per month, sometimes 3X. I always provide something for the players to eat with it being hot dogs/brats/sausage about 1/2 the time, and something off of the smoker (chicken/ribs/brisket/pulled pork ) the other 1/2 of the time if weather permits and I am feeling the urge to cook. On the rare occasions someone else from my group hosts, food is usually provided as well. Last Saturday was sausage with onions and peppers at the house of a friend.

So in a way, yes I do expect to eat a meal (even if just hot dogs, which I count as a meal) at a home game but that expectation is based on the fact both me and my players have been providing meals at our respective homes for the past few years.

So you host presently or did you mean when you used to host. You said “would provide…”

Was your game monthly or more often. I’m getting closer to being an empty nester (2 out, 2 at home). My food bill has been steadily declining.

We have plenty of fun. That’s why they come and come back.

I guess if it starts earlier than 6, I kind of expect there to be food. Not in a "hey you're supposed to feed me, where's the food" kind of expect, but moreso I just figure most people would if it goes across dinner time.

Doesn't matter to me once I start playing cards I'll forget to eat anyway

Yeah I’m already ordering pizza for the family so I just order more for anyone that wants some. It also helps get people to the game faster as most come right from work. If I had to wait for everyone to go home, talk to their families, change, etc. then we would be starting hours later.

But, me personally, no I would not expect to eat at a pokah game…just drink.

I haven't hosted in quite a while, work has been a killer for me, but my buddies host and sometimes provide food. I'll host again sometime.
