Why do people host home games? (1 Viewer)

for context, i have never been to a home game of poker, the reason i'm asking this question isn't because i think home games are stupid, but i just would like to understand why people host home games and what home games have that casino games do not

thank you

The answer is: friends. We have friends we want to hang out with

To properly educate the next generation of degenerates. It’s our duty! (Minors aren’t allowed at tables in casinos.)

Cowboys play poker in saloons for free.
Friends play poker in homes for free.

Casinos: "Let's get legislation passed so poker can only be played here for a fee"

And chips we want/need to justify.
This is definitely part of it, at least among the PCF masses I'd have to imagine. I mean, how else are you going to justify a cash set? And a tournament set? And a limit set? And a travel set? And a tribute set? And a novelty set? And a high roller set? And a heads up set? And a microstakes set? And a...

So I can play micro stakes and hang out with my friends who would never want to wager "real" money playing poker. Loses some of the excitement and the play is poor, but I don't feel bad winning against a friend of a friend who barely knows the rules when they're buying in for $10~20. I'm putting more money into hosting than I'm winning anyway. Also you don't have to worry about shenanigans when everyone knows each other and the stakes are so low.

We mostly play 5c/10c, but there's no buy in cap, so the few that are really into it will just top off over max stack and get their gamble in that way.

Also makes getting drunk and punting off your stack more fun. I don't drink at the card room because it always leads to bad play.

With my old church, we used to play a tournament every Sunday for pushups instead of money. 1st out is 100 pushups and then -10 for each subsequent position knocked out. I swear they played the most serious poker when we played for pushups. Sometimes we would play for money like $50-$100 buyins but people tossed money around and chased every draw because it wasn't much money. But when pushups were involved they would tank in their decisions because no one wanted to get knocked out. It was fun and actually made the game more serious than money!

I get to control who plays in the game
I set the stakes
I’m comfortable in my own home
I Can lose a couple buyins and still have a good time with my buddies, catching up and drinking and such.
I’m not good at poker so I would lose more in a casino.
Casinos take a rake, why would you prefer that?

It's called fun. Also this rare thing called Friends. Plus the casino won't let me keep store my drinks and food there. What jerks.

I can make a seamless transition from playing poker to boinking…my two most favorite sports.

No commute to ruin the mood…

It's the social aspect for me. I have friends that go to MGM all the time because they like "poker." I prefer the social aspect of a home game that you don't get playing at a casino. These pics might help you understand.

Or even TX NL HE not offered in casinos for affordable stakes.
1/2E in Greece (minimum for any casino) is the buying-power equivalent and would feel like $3/6 NL on the American pocket.

I need to come to Greece, where I can feel like a high roller!
