But then I would only be buying one instead of buying many...what's the fun in that? I don't come here to not spend my money.

Some progress to a point of procrastination.

Closed up the box and the board slides in nicely as the lid:

Tested with the horses and they fit under nicely.

Now the point of procrastination is how I’m gonna make the dividers. I’ve decided to make them chunky as there’s plenty of space but should I make the effort to slot them so they lattice together or just cut bits and glue them in. Cut and glue would be far quicker but lattice would allow me to put a piece of cloth or felt on the bottom.

To give you an idea of the lattice look, here’s a chess set I made for my son a couple Christmases ago.

You're not building a die rolling tub with with rubber diamond craps panels?!

If the lattice were removable, it could be a die-rolling box for play in less than optimal conditions (on a plane, driving a car, at the beach, etc.).

I was thinking something along those lines. My first thought would be to use the box as a place to put the pot. But I think I prefer playing with the board in the box so that it’s raised above the playing surface and people don’t throw dice onto the horses. I’m going to put neoprene or felt on the bottom of the box so that it won’t mark the surface it’s on.

I could also make a tray for the pot that stores away in the box - there’s plenty of room.

No warping at all. Nice and flat
Just got notice that my cherry wood version was delivered today too. After calculating costs to add grommets to the pine version it was not much more. What have I gotten my crew into??? Can't wait to get home to check it out. It better be flat or Amazon's getting a call...lol.

Anyone else drilling more holes for 2/12? Those two horses win more than any other horse. I’ve got the Fineni board and 3 rolls to win seems to be too easy. Thoughts?

How many holes would you drill?

Actually impressed with the quality of this thing. Glad I went with the cherry board. It's beautiful. Thank you for posting the link @raynmanas

Damn, I did not see this version when I ordered mine. I got the pine and put the grommets in myself (fingers still hurt)..... Wish I had seen this one...... Might be ordering this and try to offload my other to a friend. :)

Without accounting for scratched horses (on the Fineni board where the number of holes is reduced by 1 for the 4-10 horses) statistically the 2, 3, 11 and 12 horses are the least likely to win. The 4 and 10 horses are the most likely to win.

I'm not smart enough to calculate the probabilities when accounting for scratched horses - I'm not even sure that it changes the probabilities. I'm tempted to write a simulation to find out though!

We have played this game a total of about 8 hours now and the 2/12 horses win about 50% of the time. Not sure if others have experienced this but those horses shouldn’t be winning that much. If the 7 horse doesn’t scratch, it hardly ever wins.

The Fineni board uses this scheme, counting the total number of moves needed to cross the finish line:

3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, 14, 11, 8, 6, 3

Dividing each of those by the number of times the roll comes up in 36 tosses (1,2,3,4,5,6,5,4,3,2,1) gives:

3, 3, 2.67, 2.75, 2.80, 2.83, 2.80, 2.75, 2.67, 3, 3

Which means that #2, #3, #11, and #12 will be the least likely to win, since they have to move more multiples of their average number of times rolled (3 multiples) than the other horses do (slightly less than 3 multiples).

However, this only counts how likely they are to win versus the other horses before the race starts but after the scratches have been rolled. If you just count how likely each horse is to win overall, then the outside horses will win much more often than the inside horses (#6, #7, #8) because the inside horses get scratched much more often than the outside horses do. Adding a few holes to the outside horses will not be enough to offset their massive advantage in only rarely getting scratched.

But like I said elsewhere, it doesn't really matter how often each horse wins, since every player has an equal chance to win no matter what the horses do.

finally made it here, very very glad i went for the cherry board (thank you NCAA squares!). the quality of the board and horses are excellent.

i am going to home games both friday and saturday night, will be bringing this along for sure.
