It seems like Singles have taken over the Auctions section ... pages upon pages ... and the vast majority with unusually high starting bids & very little action.

I'm concerned that other compelling Auctions seem to be getting lost in the shuffle since just one Seller has the ability to bump all other Auctions to the second or third page. Am I off base? Thoughts?

I was thinking that I would not be happy if I had an auction running in a "sea of auctions"... I think it would reduce visibility for sure. However, typically there isn't a large volume of auctions happening simultaneously, so not sure more rules are required (at the moment anyway).

I guess just something you have to factor in, if you decide to run an auction to sell your stuff.

Edit: voted "Don't care"

I guess the option "I don't care" should have been stated "I don't use visit the Auctions page so I don't care". Eh.

Tough topic. I just think most people hitting "I don't care" is because they like the hands-off Classifieds/Auctions approach from the mods and prefer stuff is listed here instead of eBay.

This does look a bit crazy though:

I’ve always felt pretty strongly that posting auctions here should be a privilege. I originally brought it up in the context of a user who liked to limit who he would sell to, based on his personal “asshole clause.” Fine for sales, I said, but for the privilege of using this community for auctions, you should, at the very least, include the entire community in your auction. Otherwise, take it to eBay.
So yeah, I’m great with placing restrictions on auctions that are good for the community.
Of course, I don’t own the place or make the rules, so those two cents are probably worth less than that.

Just don’t bid on them. If there’s no market then he’ll quit doing it.

I think I have that right, The Market determines everything. There’s obviously a market for it and demand on the site if he’s doing it, and doing more of it.

Let The Market decide.

I don't mind forum members posting a few auctions now and again. But the operative words are "a few." If someone is posting a lot of auctions, such as in the screenshot above, at a minimum they are now a vendor, and at a maximum they ought to knock it off.

While this sounds good in theory, I could give you countless examples how The Market fails without boundaries. Think spam, politics, negative comments in sales ads, etc.

Granted I've lost all sense of idealism, so I do truly admire those who still abide by it.

I don't care much either way but voted yes, as I would be fine with a limit. something like 10 auctions a month?

There is a fine line between spam and just selling a lot.

Certainly without a hard set rule in place, I could see the possibility of spotting an auction I want to win and then simultaneously selling couple dozen singles. That way, I raise some funds for my purchase, and bury the auction I want to win. :ninja::ninja::ninja:

I waited for the lul. Auctions have been pretty dead. I wanted to try and sell the single chips but by the page (20 chips). I listed 5 or 6 then was blasted by 20 or so!! Lol. I also thought man this feels intentional!! (I’m sure it wasn’t) I’m also a vendor and there is no way to run an auction in the vendor forum or I’d have run mine there.

I hate to see punitive action against someone that isn't breaking the site rules, but it can feel abusive.

I would like to see some sorta of bonus for supporting members, non-supporting members have a monthly cap of auctions?

I think setting up filters for samples and singles would be groovy! but also how much administration would it take?

@RivieraDanny no one is talking about you with the three tags, thanks for helping pave the way and supporting the site!

I voted yes, although I don't think it is black and white, I think it should be based on support level and maybe post level, 10 seems low, but the feedback is a consideration from the community and that can also be limiting. no answers just suggestions ;)

I'd personally pay around $5 bucks or less per auction. that would be a lot less than eBay. and its worth it because I know all my vendor sale ads get buried within seconds and its hard for me to get eyeballs around here.

Vendor sale ads don't show up in the lightning bold from what I'm told... So if your moving a lot of things you gain traction by word of mouth. But when were not the Chip Room how the heck do you get in front of those that don't know to look... Interesting.

If that were true, that would be ridiculous. But is it? I honestly don't know.
All I ever do is hit the lightning bolt (or 'New Posts,' depending on whether I'm on my phone or on my PC) and I definitely see vendor ads. I certainly can't confirm that I'm seeing all vender ads. For whatever its worth.

I posted an auction last month that quickly got buried. To make things worse, some users bumped their auctions daily. I didn't want to add to the mayhem, so I just decided not to auction anything else after that.

This was the method used at Chiptalk.

Take a look around there sometime. Oh, wait, you cant. Nobody went there anymore because you had to pay for everything, and when things went sideways, everybody - and I mean EVERYBODY bailed.

You want to shut down PCF forever, keep making such terrible and throat-slitting suggestions.

I voted yes with significant reservations. Let me play devil’s advocate for the other side for a second (he’s probably asleep right now) so we are not in an echo chamber. At least 16 out of 29 listings do have bids so, to be fair, the majority of the listings have seen action not the other way around. A link was also included which could be used to peruse the entire sale to see if a buyer had any interest in any of it. If they don’t, they could certainly scroll right past all of the listings to get to additional auctions. As a potential buyer that is what I did and had no issues locating additional auctions. Creating different tiers of sellers seems like a recipe for controversy. People already get upset about perceived different tiers of buyers (the illuminati). Finally, chips already cost too much, adding a listing surcharge will not help that, and the cost will likely passed along to buyers. I’m firmly against same. Anyhow, just some fodder for discussion.

As a lifetime member at ChipTalk, I agree with the sentiment, but damn. This might have been a teensy-weensie bit extreme.

I’d propose a basic guideline … even simply an appeal (to appease The Market advocates) to limit Sales/Auctions to a maximum of five (or ten?) live posts at a time. Encourage those that need to post more to apply for Vendor status?

they could certainly scroll right past all of the listings to get to additional auctions
It gets a little tricky once bids start coming in asynchronously. Auctions #1,4,19,2,MiscAuction,23,30,MiscAuction,17,8,2,29…

@liftapint - well I've been around long enough to know @Poker Zombie's range has no 5s, 6s, or 7s when he is posting

Also we have the same direction, I can roll with it, I love that he is passionate about it
