The samples of the Pharaoh's I got from Apache didn't have the scent either. After I bought these, I finally found out what the smell is all about. Definitely airing them out for a few days. That’s really creative! All the CCs I own were bought used so I’m not sure I’ve been exposed to the full “new China Clay smell”. Plus the ones I have most of, Spirit Mold and 8V, didn’t have the smell (or not as strong) as far as I know.
The samples of the ones that Apache makes no longer really smell since the previous owner had them for a while already. I’d have to hold them right in front of my face and then they just have a faint not-unpleasant crayons-ish scent.
How would you describe the scent? The samples of the Pharaoh's I got from Apache didn't have the scent either. After I bought these, I finally found out what the smell is all about. Definitely airing them out for a few days.
No the smell doesn't really transferNo worries about the smell getting into the fabric on your table? I guess the table’d just naturally air out once you take the chips off.
I put my Royals for 5 minutes in soapy water. Reduced smell massively. I didnt even oil these afterwards.Wash, towel dry, oil and air dry them - smell is greatly reduced
Have you ever been to that friends house that is a chain smoker if you are not? how does it feel to drive home after a visit in the car? It is shocking how much odor can be absorbed in an environment. Possibly you are just smelling something of the origin of these chips... If the label will tolerate it then toss in a bucket of soapy water and rinse off, this will go a long way to taking any odor away. Otherwise a wet cloth to remove the surface dust from the chips will probably make a huge difference.Smell is similar to mud. Like factory mixed with mud lol. My poker table is right below a house fan which is moving the air pretty well around it.
Smell is already way better and its only been a few hours so far.
Most China Clays benefit from a light oiling, not for odour, but to greatly enhance the colours (IMO). Oil transfer from handling at the table does the same thing, but takes much longer.I’m not sure oiling them is a great idea. Maybe dryer sheets on top of each rack. I once owned a set that smelled like smoke and so I stored the chips in boxes by the rack with a dryer sheet. It seemed to work for me.
