What are your thoughts on fancy decks, breaking from tradition. I was looking at some of the Thirdway Industries decks and thinking they’d be awesome for games, but know that some people might dislike the breakaway from tradition.
The most I’ve experimented with before is Black Tigers from Bicycle.
Do any playing groups here routinely use different types of decks… or is that taboo?

I don't think many people mind fancy decks. The problem is that most fancy decks are paper cards. And most people here (like poker rooms everywhere) prefer plastic cards. But show me some fancy plastic decks and I'll take a look.

Imo, playing cards are a tool -- and the fonts, colors, and artwork should be clear, legible and above all-else, not a distraction to play. Plastic cards that are easy to shuffle/deal and have low-wear and easy-clean characteristics are preferred.

There is certainly a place for 'fancy' cards, but if they don't meet the above requirements, that place is not in my games.

I have a bunch of the designer illustrated cards from Thirdway. Was quite a consistent supporter of Gio's Kickstarter projects until recently.

There is absolutely no problem with using these cards to play, if that is what you want. However, aside from the beauty of the illustrations, the cards themselves are paper stock, and therefore at a disadvantage against plastic cards for ease of play and durability. Standard index can also be hard on the eyes when looking across the long axis of a poker table in subdued lighting.

My cohort only gets to play every 3 weeks (thereabouts) so the cards do tend to last, otherwise historically when we were weekly, we did rely on plastic.
It’s a bit of an ongoing expense, but I do enjoy the variety paper-stock offers.

Could see myself playing with the glow cards but the rest are tragic haha

Yeah, I think any I consider would have to have pretty obvious suits as well.
Any recommendations from some of the ones you’ve used?
Did Gio have any four color decks?

I do not recall any four colour decks from Gio's illustrated collection. I, myself, do not use them for poker. I collect them for display and have also given them away as prizes during my fundraising parties.

If you want to try a great 4-colour deck, I suggest going with @desjgn , who is a forum Vendor sponsor. He has bridge size jumbo index 4-colour set-ups for sale.

I would stay away from the fancy decks and go with a nice setup such as Copag or Kem.

I strongly prefer standard cards, even one miss read of my cards tilts me if it's due to some crazy designed cards.

I don’t mind em.
But. I’m leaning away from plastic cards at the moment.

My casual gamblers LOVE the gold cards when they come out for blackjack.
Haha as in the cheap ones that are marketed like they’ve actually been manufactured from gold?

I’m bringing out the black tigers for my next home game.

We have always used the plastic Kem cards. They last forever and you can clean them with soda water when they get dirty.
