Hey guys I’m wondering if anyone has a good chip breakdown for a 20-50 dollar cash game at home. I can’t seem to get the calculator to work and I don’t really want to buy a bunch of 25c chips if I don’t have too. Thank you in advance!

Is this breakdown for a full table of 8? I guess I should have specified before I posted. I usually only can get 4-6 people on the table.

Gonna go out on a limb and assume you mean 20-50 buy in, not 20/50 blinds... If so, I’d go lighter on the 20s/25s than @Chipandchair suggests and bump up the 1s and 5s. My game is 50-75 buy ins and the 25s rarely see the table, only deep into the night

I don’t really host my games like that, I don’t go by nice stack sizes lol. Generally I go at least $3 in fracs and $10 in 1s. Will round out the rest accordingly.

My game is $60 but in $.25/$.50 and I almost never use the $20s but it is nice to know they are there. To me, 2 racks has been enough of $1 and $5. If I had more $5s the $20s would never get in. Certainly that last rack is a bonus rack though

First 5 barrels of fracs go to first five players but certainly do whatever you like. No reason for equal starting stacks in cash game imo

If you're doing 20-50 dollar buy-ins, I would recommend doing .25/.50 cent blinds or .50/.50, but I would push to make buy in at $50 if these are the blinds you go with. But if you're doing 20-30 dollar buy-ins, then I would recommend doing .25/.25 cent blinds. These buy-in / blind structures help sustain play and prevent too many all-ins for the heck of it.

A good breakdown would be
150x - .25
200x - $1
80x - $5
20x - $20 or $25

EACH STARTING STACK (for 8) (although it doesn't really matter if everyone starts with the same stack.)
$5 in .25
$25 in $1
$20 in $5

This breakdown allows for plenty of re-buys with a group this small.

Yeah I think 100 25c chips is plenty good.

For $20 max buy in I would set the blinds at 0.25-0.25, for $40-50 max buy in I would go for blinds at 0.25-0.50, either way, 0.25 chips are what you want.

Not sure how many chips you were planning to buy, but I think the following is pretty safe.

100*0.25
300*1
200*5

600 chips, Bank 1325.

That's 26 buy in's of 50, or more than 4 per player at 6 handed. And almost 3 per player 9-handed if that ever happens. Covering an average of 3 buy-ins per player is more than sufficient.

I would issue chips for $20 buy ins as follows:
5 stacks of 20/15/0 (of chips 0.25/1/5)
11 stacks of 0/20/0
48 stacks of 0/0/4

For $50 buy ins I would do this:
5 stacks of 20/30/3
5 stacks of 0/30/4
16 stacks of 0/0/10

Once all the 0.25 chips are out of the bank, just have players make change at the table.

Good luck.

How big is your typical bank at the end of the night and do you think that would grow in the near future? Does your group bet more with 1s or with 5s? If 1s, then go heavier on the 1s like JustinInMN suggested. If they bet more with 5s then I would only get 100 fracs, 200 max for the 1s and the rest primarily 5s with some 20s or 25s. I used to think I needed 120 - 140 fracs but have found 100 is more than enough. 500-600 chips should be plenty.

Ex:
100 - 0.25
200 to 300 - 1s (depending if these are the workhorse chip)
100 to 200 - 5s (more if these are the workhorse chip)
maybe 20 - 50 higher denom like 20s or 25s

We do typically $40 buyins in a 0.25/0.50 game and usually have about 8 people. My starting stacks are
8 - 0.25
13 - 1s
5 - 5s

On early rebuys I give less fracs and 1s, more 5s. I like introducing more fracs and 1s early so we don't have to make change as often since there's more to go around.
4 - 0.25
9 - 1s
6 - 5s

On late rebuys it's all 5s and/or 25s if we run out of 5s.

My rule of thumb is go heavier on the fives when the big blind is 1 or more and typical buy ins are 100+. When the big blind is less than 1, I like to go heavier on singles. I like buy ins where players have a couple barrels of chips to play on average, so I am heavier on ones than most PCFers. Too many fives lead to short stacks when 10 of them make a $50 buy in. (And only 4 chips for a $20 buy-in) So that's why I have preference for more singles for the stakes the OP mentioned. I would rather give out 30-40 singles per player as long as possible instead of 4-10 5 chips, althought that will be the only way at the end.

(On an aside, if you check the links in my signature, you will see in my custom set I went for an absurd number of singles :p.)

And last point, I can't imagine running out of chips with this set, especially if only 6 handed. I don't think chips higher than the 5 make any sense at these stake, but $20 bills can play live in an emergency if needed.

So just thinking more, if you really wanted to play it tight because this will be a 6 handed game primarily you could do this 400 chip set.

80*0.25
220*1
80*5
20*25

400 chips, Bank 1140

This might get a little tight in your higher stakes game, but you have 22 buy ins, so again between 3-4 per player six handed.

For $50 buy in,

4 Stacks of 20/30/3 (0.25/1/5)
5 Stacks of 0/20/6
7 Stacks of 0/0/5/1 (0.25/1/5/25)
6 Stacks of 2*25

Thank you everyone for the information, we as a group have only played tournament style not cash and we wanted to switch over. We all play just for fun and I don’t have much knowledge on chip/stack/blind structure for cash games. That being said I do appreciate all of you for reaching out and helping :D

600 chips could probably cover a full table of 10.
For a table of 4-6 you could probably get away with 500 or even 400. but it depends on the maximum amount of money you'd predict could be on the table at the end of the night. For $20 buy-in, I'd consider 0.25/0.25 stakes. For $50 buy-in, then 0.25/0.50.

60-100 quarters
100-200x $1
balance in $5s

At 400 chips to cover your smallest stakes:
100x $0.25 + 200x $1 + 100x $5 gives you $725 of bank. If you don't think you reach $500 at the end of the night on the table, then this is all you need.

Add racks of $5 as your game grows for more players or more buy-ins.
