(thanks @Jeff, and I'm tagging @pltrgyst as well.)

My Oh My!!!

What a collection @Bloody Marvelous! Fantastic bottles for sure... So many gems there it's hard to even single out a few, just too many.

Thanks for the heads up however, as you might know, the two big auction sites in the UK and the two largest specialty retailers in London, as of a couple of weeks ago, do not ship to most US states anymore. All those places are working on a solution since the American market is huge for auctions and those retailers but as of right now, the great majority of us here in the US would be out of the running.

I will be following prices of a few bottles regardless and depending on how it goes, buy a few and have them shipped some place else.

Good luck with the sale! Again, fantastic bottles man...

Hats off to you guys that collect whisky. For me that would be like collecting chocolate chip cookies. Can you imagine if we could consume Paulson chips?

I hear you Jeff. I'm kinda the same way. Most of my bottles are open. Some, just waiting for the right occasion. But just like with chips, when you start buying lots of goodies, many won't see play often, LOL!!!

So sorry for the dumbass question, but when you are selling a whiskey, is it like a bottle of wine? Can you sell part bottles of whiskey?

Holy hell that's a LOT of money tied up in whiskey! GLWS!

Not sure I understand the question...

Do you mean selling per bottle? Yes. You don't need a case of whisky bottles. If your bottle came as part of a set, you can still sell per bottle.
Or do you mean selling opened bottles? No. Bottles need to be factory sealed. The buyer needs to be certain they're buying the whisky the distiller put in the bottle, and not a whisky bottle of ice tea. If you've got a really old bottle, it's possible some whisky/alcohol evaporated through the cork. That will affect its value, but you can still sell it since it is still factory sealed.

Thanks for the tag Jeff. I've bid on a couple of them.

If you guys want, let new know what your bidding on and I won't bid against you.

Not that I bought it for that, but whisky can be an excellent investment. I started collecting whisky about 10 years ago, and just like pokerchips, it can take up quite a bit of cash.
Just like pokerchips, their value can increase as they're becoming harder to come by.

To give you an idea, the Macallan 25 yo Sherry Oak I bought about 8 years ago for about 239 EUR. Back then they were not very common, but also not very expensive yet. SInce then they've become rarer and rarer, and more people are looking for this legendary whisky. So right now it's worth anywhere from 2,200 to 2,500 GBP.

If you're thinking of investing in whisky, I recommend buying limited releases of well known distilleries like Macallan, Dalmore, Highland Park, or any Islay distillery.

Also check online reviews from Whiskyfun, or Jim Murray's Whisky Bible. Limited bottlings with high ratings are sure to see their prices skyrocket as they're becoming rarer.
An example there would be the Lagavulin 21yo from 1985. I bought two bottles for around 199 EUR each, and I opened one of them. Jim Murray give this whisky a 96/100, and Whiskyfun described it as probably the best whisky ever made. These bottles are now extremely sought after, with retailers (like thewhiskyexchange.com) asking in excess of 2,500 GBP.

Great selection -- the Ardbegs, Bowmores, the older Scapa, and especially the Port Ellens!

Unfortunately, I stand zero chance of drinking up what I have now. But if anyone buys any of the above, I'd be more than willing to help out with the consumption part...

Good luck with the auctions!

Wow. This collection! Fantastic and anyone that knows me knows that I'd be a buyer for several of those. However, just getting back from Hawaii, booking a Disney vacation, and hosting PnBBC in June my "fun" funds are pretty well tapped for these types of bottles so I'm out for now. Those Port Ellen bottles might just convince me otherwise.....

There's been a HUGE spike in interest in the whisky market in the time period you are describing, especially in the last 5 years or so, with prices going through the roof. I'm not into the whole scene so I don't know all the particulars of what is driving it, but everyone seems to be talking about it these days. Popular things like that can go out of favor, though, and I'd be surprised if that level of interest inflation can be sustained. I guess we'll see! Awesome for you that you got in with the prices you paid and hope you make some good scratch off of them! And enjoy a dram or two on occasion!

What I'm not a fan of is that with this HUGE spike in interest came the realization from the whisky producers that they can hike up their prices and still get people to buy their product.
The Lagavulin 21 retailed for 120EUR back when it was released in 2007. When they created a new Lagavulin 21 in 2012, it retailed for 300 EUR.

Whisky has gone from a consumable to a collectable, which I think is a crying shame. I have an open bottle of the Laga 21, and it's the best thing I've ever had. There are a lot of bottles that I didn't want to let go of. I'm a huge Islayphile, and was looking forward to cracking the Port Ellens and Ardbegs, and also the Talisker 20 one day. After I've got my bike I'll probably be trying to reacquire a couple of these bottles, even at the current prices, and it will be to drink them. Not for them to be sitting pretty in a cabinet.

For now though, I've still got over 30 open bottles of whisky, so I'll be enjoying a variety of drams over the coming years :).

Did you display all or part of your collection? How do you store this much good whiskey?

Keep them out of direct sunlight, and keep the bottles upright so the whisk(e)y doesn't deteriorate the cork. That's really all it takes.
It's not like wine, whisk(e)y doesn't mature in the bottle, so you don't need to keep them in a temperature controlled environment (though extreme heat should be avoided for obvious reasons :)).

I had displays all over my apartment...

Yow. I have a pretty decent collection myself (although not as extensive as bloody’s!). How do I display it? Lol, it is all in a cupboard.
