…and 43 mm chips in general

Aren’t they too heavy??

Before I went down the rabbit hole I bought a cheap set of non denominated dice chips for a planned cash game. Obviously those won’t do. Hell I even played a few games with them and man is it awful, people spend more time trying to figure out what their bet is gonna be than actually playing poker! And the weight, feels like I’m throwing a pile of rocks on the table when I bet.

Anyways, I’ve ordered a few sample sets, and the one I think I like best (by far) are the Royal card room from Apache PCs. The one thing after playing with them though is again the weight. Man are they heavy. And honestly their weight reminds me a lot of my dice chips when I start slinging them around. Anyone have any experience with this? Are they too heavy?

The other option are the majestic but man those things just don’t really compete looks wise (who picked that ugly pink out for the 25c chip??)

The dream set I think would be a 39 mm Royal chip. Maybe swap the ugly grey $1 and gorgeous white $500 and add a $20 denom yellow or something. Just my selfish thoughts trying to build a cash set over here haha.

I'm surprised that you think they're too heavy. So many cheap plastic chips have metal slugs inside of them that push them north of 13 grams per chip. Those are heavy.

I don't consider the royals heavy at all. In fact, I think that there are some leaded 39 mm chips that are heavier than them. As far as 43 mm chips go in general, I'm a huge fan of them. I absolutely love them, even though they come with their own issues such as storage.

If you're set on a China clay chip, then in my opinion the royals are your best option. But if you want a lighter chip in the same budget that gives you customizability, there's always the 39mm cards mold "CM" chips.

I have owned a set of Royals and they did not feel too heavy to me at all. The china clay smell didn’t bother me either. I’ve owned a B&G plastics set as well, which are around 14g. Found those to be too heavy so I know where my limits are.

Imo the all 43mm isn’t a problem. I used my set for one 16 player tourney and no one commented on the size. You’ll get used to it. Of course if you regularily switch between 39 and 43, the difference will be very noticable at first. Only reason I sold is I very rarely play tournaments and wanted to make room for more cashsets instead.

After getting an extensive collection of samples the royals were the front runners for me too! If you haven't gotten a sample set of cards mold chips I do recommend you try to get some as well. My plan is to see if a can land a cards mold set that someone is trying to offload and if not go ahead and get the royals since I don't want to wait for a group buy.

I’m about to be selling a 900 chip cards mold sunset beach cash set…as soon as it arrives at my house. If you are super interested I might be able to get the shipped to you instead of myself. Just an FYI.

Btw…selling because I ordered them before creating the Grand Casino tributes, so I ordered a buttload of those. Don’t need sunset beach anymore. Shoot me a PM if you are interested in the breakdown and cost. I think they are arriving at Justin’s house today…

Of all of the China Clay chips I think the Royals are the best! Love the feel of those chips and feel like real clay. Also they don't seem to have that terrible burnt crayon mixed with pygmy goats crap smell! Lol

I only bought a sample set but @arch3r bought a full playable set and I know he is a fan as well. Maybe he could chime in.

Not sure why you think the Royals are too heavy?

They weigh on average ~11g

where dice chips are closer to 12g

and slugged plastic are around 13g

My Tina 39mm ceramics come in around 9.5g
PXL_20221118_135502990.jpg PXL_20221118_135511936.jpg

And 39mm Paulsons, depending on leaded or not come in at 8.5g to 10.5-11g

PXL_20221118_135808256.jpg PXL_20221118_135814134.jpg

And 43mm Paulson are 10-11g

Unless the 43mm is leaded, then we're talking 14g+

So the Royals are right in line with most other chips, maybe a bit heavier then standard Paulsons, but they are a larger chips so an extra gram or two is too be expected.

Bottom line, the Royals are a great option. Fantastic colors and you can get them unlabeled and customize them very easily.

I love my tourney set.

For relatively inexpensive non clay chips they are very nice. They fact that you can get them either labeled or blank is a real bonus.

@aochs2765 here's a thread where we discuss Royals vs CM chips: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/card-mold-quality-comparison-to-apache-cc.92155/#post-1899978

My post kinda outlines some pro/cons of each, but I'll repost it here:

Royals:
  • Weird china clay smell (but less than other CC's)
  • Require oiling
  • Moderate customizability
  • 43mm is harder to find storage for
  • More expensive than CM
  • Have a better feel than CM in my opinion; more like a "clay" chip
Cards Mold
  • Lots of customization
  • No smell
  • Graphics/colors can have constancy issues and quality issues
  • Cheaper than Royals
  • Could wear quickly
  • Faux shaped inlays do look great

I might be interested if he’s not. What’s the breakdown/total cost? Just looked up those chips and they look pretty nice!

Where can I find the cards mold chips?

There are usually group buys which are run here on a monthly basis. I think the current one is closed for orders, but you can find it here:
https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...no-rpc-sunset-beach.94171/page-5#post-2009336

Watch the Group Buys section for new threads that pop up every few weeks.

With that said, you can order just for yourself from "Tina" on Alibaba. There's a whole thread about it here:

I love my Royals. My group really likes them.
Easy to customize. If Apache doesn't have the labels you need, BRProPoker can make labels for you.

@Huskerboy has a set of 43mm Royals that he uses in his cash game group. They are really a pretty good chip for the money. 43mm have a much nicer feel than the 39mm.

They were too smelly and slippery for my group of friend
That's good to know (Slippery wise). That's one factor I consider for chips I like. I hate when chips are slippery.

Does anyone else feel they are slippery? I made the mistake of buying Bluff canyon. They are heavy and slippery IMO.

Does anyone know what the smell is that China Clays come with? I imagine it has to do with their manufacturing process and the color that is injected into each chip? The chips I just received from Apache (Bank Design - 400 chips) are almost emitting a toxic like fume in my opinion... Can feel it in my nose... Not fun

I can't put my finger on what the smell is exactly. The Royals are kinda like a cheap burned plastic with a side of foot.

The smell fades a little over time, especially if you wipe them down and let them de-gas.

I don’t mind Royals. Only have a couple of samplers. Oiling CC’s takes care of the smell IMO. At least for awhile. I’ll get back to you.

Friend of mine has a small set of Royals and I was really impressed. Of all the China clays I’ve handled I would say these felt the best to me imho. Samples are key. A lot of samples…….

I've owned the famous dice chips and Bicycle chips, and played in a couple of casinos, and I was surprised as to how light they feel, it's a bit discombobulating, but I guess I'll get used to it.

Royals are the best chips out of the China clays. Love the bigger size too!
